Peter Baumann of Tangerine Dream has some good ideas and some better than average sounds, but his poor songwriting ruins any big plans he might have had for Strangers in the Night, his second Amer ican release. Pop musicians have been cri- ★*★★★ Exceptional Very good Average ★★ Poor ★ Trash ticized over the years for thousands of reasons, but the ; main one has been the banality | of the lyrics they commit to | vinyl. Baumann uses smart in strumentations, yet his lyrics are the same old cliches, put into two verses and a repeat chorus. The title song is — yes, you j guessed it — the Frank Sinatra classic, retooled by Baumann's synthesizer-based lines. The vocals, by Eli Holland, chant nearly a monotone throughout the verse and finally break into melody for the chorus. The song holds together because of a strong, rhythmic drum program that counterpoints the subtle vocalizations. Amazingly, this version works and has begun to break onto some dance floors. Several other decent songs show up on the album, but once again, they rest almost entirely on their melody and overall sound. Once you listen to the lyrics a few times, it's obvious that they have very little to say. If Baumann could hook up with a songwriter with imagination and perk up the energy in his own sound, he would be as im pressive as any of the new music artists that are in competition with him. Until then, forget it. Big Country The Crossing PolyGram ★★★★ I have a feeling that this is an album music fans will be "dis covering" for years to come just because it won't get a lot of attention right now. Big Country has a sound that integrates some of the roots of British synth-pop with strong and innovative songs that are moody, serious, yet melodic. Because they choose not to keep a strict rhyme scheme, the lyrics are able to ^ remain serious and still cover a wide range of ideas. Many of the songs seem to have some historical basis, but it is always just an impression, not a pin-pointed event. For example. one of the verses from "In a Big Country:" I never took the smile away From anybody's face And that's a desperate way to look » For someone who is still a child The lyrics are often vague like this, but it strengthens them to an extent, making the listener search for his own explanation of the song. The album's sound is a mix between U2's traditional Scot tish stance and Roxy Music's re finement and — surprise, sur prise — is very danceable on many tracks. The element that sets Big Country apart from the current British pack is its energy along with the smattering of ideas that they get across. Overall this has to be one of the most original albums, both in style and content, that I have listened to all year. The sound is new, and yet has a familar quali ty that makes listening to it a warm experience. Reviews by Cary Stegall ana Patrick Zinn.
