Brooks, and his colleagues at the GeoScience Research Cor poration in Salisbury, Md., re cently told Science Digest maga zine that satellite data show huge areas of the United States are slowly subsiding. have f : agefi wasm* collet belKS ■ntCot social*' :hal[ clui*' Brooks blames the sinkage — which occurs almost exclusively in Sunbelt states such as Texas, Arizona and California — on a population explosion that has made huge demands on the area’s underground water supp ly, causing a drastic lowering of the water table. Along with the lowered water table came the sinkage — a drop as great as 12.5 feet in Arizona and up to 7.5 feet in Houston, so far. ■MSC ARTS COMMITTEE PRESENTS THE NATIONAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY 9ean» To keep the earth from fall ing, says Brooks, cities must de velop above-ground water sup plies and stop relying as much on depleted underground aquifers. Ironically, early satellite data showed parts of Houston actual ly to be rising. It turned out that Vapidly growing Texassize sky scrapers downtown were reflect ing the satellite’s beam and giv ing false readings. £ ^ Hallmark Cards It and Gift Center ^ TIlSlE'g t ^.s and q C* v |g ^ • Weddings and Corsages ^ • Roses • Foliage Plants • Blooming Plants • Cut Flowers (Friday Flowers - $2.95) Flowers For All Occasions i N. Although they resemble people with a growth-hormone defi ciency, tests reveal normal levels of the hormone in their blood. According to new studies re ported in the New England Journal of Medicine, Pygmies have a major deficiency of a sub stance called “insulin-like growth factor,” (IGF)-I, one of a class of secondary growth fac tors.
