College Ave. P. O. Box 3667 Bryan, Texas 77801 By JOHN VANORE Battalion Staff Writer Yes, there once was a "Beach Girl. She and her husband, former Beach Boys keyboard wizard Daryl Dragon, have a band together now. They call themselves the Captain and Tennille. They performed at a Town Hall Special Attraction performance Saturday to a crowd of 1,800. Aggie- land was the second stop on their tour, following the success of their debut hit, "Love Will Keep Us To gether." Kip Adotta’s forty-five minute comic set loosened the audience for the headliners, the Captain and Tennille. Backing up the husband- and-wife team were three vocalists (two sisters and a brother-in-law), plus a drummer and a bassist. "Our sound is a keyboard sound, ” Tennille said. “We wanted to be dif ferent. Dragon got has start with the Beach Boys in 1967 and, while on a tour, bought himself a captain s hat. During a keyboard solo, Brian Wil son introduced him as the “Captain of Keyboards. " Needless to say, the name stuck. When he left the Beach Boys in 1972 with his wife Toni, they got their start playing nightclubs as a duet. Since that time, they have ex panded their act and released two singles. The first, “The Way I Want to Touch You, was only a regional hit in the Los Angeles area. But it got them signed to a major label. That song also opened their set Saturday night. Tennille was the group s lead vocalist, introducing the band and the songs, and establishing a rap port with the audience. About halfway through the hour- and-a-half show, Tennille brought the Captain into the limelight for a short “Fifties-style” routine. This led into a moving rendition of “Daniel, a former hit single by Elton John. Tennille sand back-up on Elton John’s “Caribou” album, and this song is in their repertoire as a form of acknowledgement to him. Saturday night was a time for the Captain and Tennille to try out songs from their soon-to-be re leased second album. One of these songs was "1954 Boogie Blues. Finally, they did it. The song everyone was waiting for. The first verse was in Spanish, and the rest was in English. Toni Tennille explained the story behind tl Spanish version. “The people associated wi A&M (Records) in the Latin con 1 tries . . . loved the song, and ask( for a Spanish lyric for release in th<' own countries .... A&M Recor sent it out to DJ’s and thong they’d get a kick out of it. And 1 caught on.
