Page 12 THE BAITALIO WEDNESDAY, MAVJ.tt SWC meet right around corner Tracksters journey to Meet of Champions By PAUL McGRATH Managing Editor A token squad of Aggie tracksters will journey to Houston this Satur day to pit their talents in the Meet of Champions. The meet will be held in some what delapidated Jeppesen Stadium. The prelims will begin at 3 p.m. and the finals at 7 p.m. Coach Charles Thomas will be at the high school track meet in Austin for recruiting purposes as about a dozen of his charges compete in the Houston meet. Chuck Butler and Horace Grant will run in the open quarter. Butler will also compete in the 220 and Grant will try to qualify for the con ference meet in the half mile. Charles Dawson is scheduled to go in the 100-yard dash and Bruce Smith will try his luck in the six mile. Mike Williams and Richard McGilvary will take on the 120-yard high hurdles. Field event-wise, Pat Ruehle will try to vault the high bar and Bill Newton, despite a sore arm, will try to throw the javelin. Lynn Byrd and Don Riggs are signed up for the high jump. The Aggies still have a small in jury problem with Jacob Yemme still hurting and Gerald D’Ambrosio designated as doubtful. D’Ambrosio possibly may run the century in Houston this weekend. Thomas is in the midst of getting all of his people situated for confer ence. Five Aggies have qualified for 220 and only one in the 100. Thomas says it has become a problem to get the maximum number possible qualified for the SWC title meet. A&M has signed five recruits in cluding former Aggie hurdler Craig McPhail who has re-transferred from Ranger Junior College. Three half milers are among the quintet. Walter Jachimowicz was the 880 state champ in Virginia and Tommy Glass of Odessa was the top Texas half miler. South African Tony Wheeler also specializes in the 880 and the quarter as well. The fifth signee is Curtis Collier from El Paso. Collier is a top-notch hurdler and can also run on the re lays. Thomas has only six scholarslii[j to handout as the team can on!, have a total of 23 scholarship athele participating. The Aggies will unite tobattletk Baylor Bears in a Dual meet Mai 15, their last meet before the SWC contest in Lubbock May 24. QB Jeffrey in coaches All-star tilt LUBBOCK — Baylor’s Grant Teaff will have one more opportun ity to coach the quarterback who led his Bears to their first conference crown in 50 years. Neal Jeffrey, a three-year starter at Baylor who became a familiar face to football fans throughout the coun try, announced Saturday that be will play for Teaff s West team intbe 15th annual Coaches All-America Football Game scheduled in Texas Tech’s Jones Stadium. The 6-1, 180-pound field general hit on 100 of 181 passes for 1,411 yards and eight touchdowns during the 1974 campaign. He was named All-Southwest Conference and was the winner of the coveted Kern Tips Memorial Award. Coach Steve Sloan’s East team also added two outstanding perfor mers Saturday when Michigans two-time All-American safety David Brown and Miami’s All-American middle guard Rubin Carter said they have signed to play in tbe summer classic. Brown, drafted by Pittsburgh in the first round, returned 48 punts for 531 yards to rank among the top three in Michigan history. He had 212 tackles, broke up 21 passes and intercepted nine during his three seasons as a starter. The 6-1, 188-pounder served as co-captain of the 1974 Michigan eleven. Carter, a 6-2, 255-pounder, is rated as one of the two greatest foot ball players of all time at Miami (Ted Hendricks was the other). He broke virtually every defensive record in the books at Miami. Carter made 306 tackles during his career. He has 4.7 spefed in the 40 and is known for his deadly tackling ability. A total of 30 players for each team will be named. The game, featuring All-Americans from throughout the country, is sponsored by the Ameri can Football Coaches Association in conjunction with the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club who make up District Two-Tk2 Lions International.
