SWC meet right around corner
Tracksters journey to Meet of Champions
By PAUL McGRATH
Managing Editor
A token squad of Aggie tracksters
will journey to Houston this Satur
day to pit their talents in the Meet of
Champions.
The meet will be held in some
what delapidated Jeppesen
Stadium. The prelims will begin at 3
p.m. and the finals at 7 p.m.
Coach Charles Thomas will be at
the high school track meet in Austin
for recruiting purposes as about a
dozen of his charges compete in the
Houston meet.
Chuck Butler and Horace Grant
will run in the open quarter. Butler
will also compete in the 220 and
Grant will try to qualify for the con
ference meet in the half mile.
Charles Dawson is scheduled to go
in the 100-yard dash and Bruce
Smith will try his luck in the six
mile.
Mike Williams and Richard
McGilvary will take on the 120-yard
high hurdles. Field event-wise, Pat
Ruehle will try to vault the high bar
and Bill Newton, despite a sore
arm, will try to throw the javelin.
Lynn Byrd and Don Riggs are
signed up for the high jump.
The Aggies still have a small in
jury problem with Jacob Yemme
still hurting and Gerald D’Ambrosio
designated as doubtful. D’Ambrosio
possibly may run the century in
Houston this weekend.
Thomas is in the midst of getting
all of his people situated for confer
ence. Five Aggies have qualified for
220 and only one in the 100. Thomas
says it has become a problem to get
the maximum number possible
qualified for the SWC title meet.
A&M has signed five recruits in
cluding former Aggie hurdler Craig
McPhail who has re-transferred
from Ranger Junior College. Three
half milers are among the quintet.
Walter Jachimowicz was the 880
state champ in Virginia and Tommy
Glass of Odessa was the top Texas
half miler. South African Tony
Wheeler also specializes in the 880
and the quarter as well.
The fifth signee is Curtis Collier
from El Paso. Collier is a top-notch
hurdler and can also run on the re
lays.
Thomas has only six scholarslii[j
to handout as the team can on!,
have a total of 23 scholarship athele
participating.
The Aggies will unite tobattletk
Baylor Bears in a Dual meet Mai
15, their last meet before the SWC
contest in Lubbock May 24.

LUBBOCK — Baylor’s Grant
Teaff will have one more opportun
ity to coach the quarterback who led
his Bears to their first conference
crown in 50 years.
Neal Jeffrey, a three-year starter
at Baylor who became a familiar face
to football fans throughout the coun

will play for Teaff s West team intbe
15th annual Coaches All-America
Football Game scheduled in Texas
Tech’s Jones Stadium.
The 6-1, 180-pound field general
hit on 100 of 181 passes for 1,411
yards and eight touchdowns during
the 1974 campaign. He was named
All-Southwest Conference and was
the winner of the coveted Kern Tips

Coach Steve Sloan’s East team
also added two outstanding perfor
