THE BATTALION FRIDAY, APRIL, 26, 1974 Page 3 Portugal premier ousted LISBON, Portugal l^) — Re bellious troops pledging democra cy at home and an end to the costly war against black indepen dence movements in Portugal’s African territories overthrew the authoritarian government of Pre mier Marcello Gaetano on Thurs day. Gen. Antonio de Spinola, ap parent leader of a new military junta, went on nationwide radio and television early Friday to pro mise freedom of thought and speech, free elections to the Na tional Assembly and “justice with the citizen having his rights.” Seated beside him were six of the seven junta members, includ ing Spinola’s old military boss, Gen. Francisco da Costa e Gomes. The two were ousted from the leadership of the armed forces in March after Spinola published a book attacking Portugal’s policy of tight military control over its African territories. Delirious crowds surged through the streets of Lisbon Thursday night and a navy ship fired a tri- bulletin board TONIGHT MUSLIM STUDENTS ASSOCIATION will meet in Room 402 of the Rudder Tower at 8 p.m. Dr. Muhammad Ishaq will speak on "Industrial Potential of the Islamic World." Plans are being made to umphal salvo. Unconfirmed re ports said at least four persons had been killed in Lisbon, includ ing a police inspector. Rebel broadcasts said Gaetano, 68, and several of his Cabinet ministers had presented their resignations to Gen. Antonio de Spinola after tanks surrounded them at police headquarters in downtown Lisbon. Gaetano’s res ignation would signify the end of the authoritarian civilian regime that the late Antonio de Oliveira Salazar set up in 1932. The newspaper O Seculo said Gaetano later was escorted to a plane—repqjrtedly by Spinola— and forced to leave for the Portu guese island of Madeira. Portugal, the poorest and most backward country in Western Eu rope, has been spending about 40 per cent of its budget and main taining 142,000 soldiers in Africa in its struggle to hold on to An gola, Mozambique and Portuguese Guinea. The drain on the country’s manpower and feconomy has caus ed major discontent, and Spinola recently published a book recom mending a political solution with rebel elements in the valuable African territories—perhaps a commonwealth system. A. Lacey. Only those students who are currently enrolled for the 1974 Spring Semester will be eligible for preregistration. Meeting at 9 p.m. in Room 145 of the Physics Building. Bike-a-thon set Saturday The first annual Brazos Bike- A-Thon is Saturday, with all do nations goin gto the Bryan Boys Club. The Bike-A-Thon will cover a 30 mile course and is open to any one 10 years of age or older. It is sponsored by Radio Stations WTAW AM 1150 and WTAW FM 92. It will start at 8:30 a. m. in Parking lot 50, across from the Zachry Engineering Building. Sponsor sheets are available at various area merchants, Room 103 of the YMCA Building. University Symphony slates ‘first’ The University Symphonic Band will present its first performance at 7:30 Tuesday in the Rudder Center Auditorium. Joe McMul len will conduct the first part of the program which includes “Sin- fonia Nobilissima” and “Fiddler on the Roof.” Guest director R. V. Leach will direct the closing selections. In Thursdasy’s rebellion, the rebel broadcasts said President Americo Thomaz and Cabinet members were surrounded at a police strongpoint in Lisbon, but O Seculo said Thomasz was hold ing out in an army barracks at Monsanto near the capital.
