Washington inBi ’Idle Decadence’ Theme of ‘Last Tango’ THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1973 Page 5 By BRAD ELLIS ■ Bernardo Bertolucci’s “Last Ingo In Paris” is a very sub- Bctive film liable to strike most ipeople differently. ■ The story is one of an affair Between Paul, an American whose w ife has recently killed herself, an d Jeanne, a young French girl. But neither knows the other’s name, at Paul’s insistence. And in spite of a tendency to speak of each person’s past and to phi losophize about life and love, Paul insists that no names be used in their apartment and that what goes on outside the apartment be as seldom referred to as their af fair is to others, which is to say never. In fact, the couple exhibits strange behavior throughout their affair, including in their encoun ters some rather unceremonious sexual intercourse as well as what might be called perverse sexual intercourse. Although the sexual activity may offend some, the film is still not completely speci fic, and this writer was at least very blase about the sex. Marlon Brando plays Paul, 45, graying and getting fat. He can’t understand his wife’s suicide, and was rather friendly with her lov er. Maria Schneider plays Jeanne, 23, pretty and in love with a young French film maker, who is filming his relationship with his intended bride. Brando, on the other hand informs the girl quite candidly and in a remarkable dis play of philosophy that the best she is ever going to get is right there in that apartment, and that she will never realize her dreams of a man who will never let her feel alone. He responds to her claim that he is that man by de manding more perverse behavior from her. It is a very dark and brown movie. The mood is depressing. Even the bright daytime scenes seem overcast. These people in this film have got an unusual out look on life and it is evidenced in both their behavior and the pictures and scenes. It’s a mood evoking film with rather carefully constructed sequences and a de liberately arranged story resolu tion. The whole movie is a deliberate demonstration of idle decadence, a theme popular with Italian di rectors for fifteen years. That this film was made in both Eng lish and French-with-English-sub- titles, lends a little more life to the interpersonal play. Bonfire ‘Ready for the Torch’ Students working on the bonfire were walking tall Tuesday, taller than usual. Head Yell Leader Griff Lasley, in charge of the mammoth construction project, said the bonfire will be ready for the torch at 7:30 p. m. tonight. “I was beginning to think this would be a dry bonfire,” one senior commented. “It would have been unusual not to have any rain.” An early Tuesday shower removed the possibility. Coeds, civilian students and Cadet Corps members working on the stack south of Dun can Hall found there was enough mud to cake several layers on their footgear. faristmas Specials TREE TOP DECORATION 0 MtttV BUBBLE LIGHT SET 10 BUBBLING BULBS.
