One good turn leads to another, and another. wmm 'A SWC Football Roundup Aggie Defense Spotlighted The No. 1 defense took the spot light Tuesday as the Texas Ag gies ran through a full-scale scrimmage in light-to-heavy rain. In one half of play, the top de fenders allowed a total of five yards rushing in 18 plays and had three passes completed on them in 11 attempts for 34 yards. Safety James Daniels came up with an interception for the Ma roon unit. “There were some real good points on defense,” coach Emory Bellard said following the two and one-half hour scrimmage. “But the offense was very poor. The defense showed a lot of con sistency. We still have a ways to go.” There were only three touch downs scored in the session. Full back Alvin Bowers tallied from seven yards out for the Maroon. Fullback Bucky Sams scored from one yard out for the No. 2 de fense, and freshman split end Robert Verde caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from senior quar- tferback Tim Trimmier for the No. 8 offense. The second and third defensive units, composed of mainly fresh men and sophomores, more than held their own. No. 1 quarterback Mike Jay was held out of the scrimmage for pre cautionary reasons. Freshman David Shipman guided the Ma roon offense until sustaining a slight knee sprain in the first half. Freshman David Walker fin ished the half with the Maroon offense and also guided the No. 2 offense. Arkansas Texas AUSTIN (A»)—Linebacker and co-captain Glen Gaspard of the Texas Longhorns has no tear in his injured right knee and will not require surgery, a school spokes man said Tuesday. A team doctor put an elastic support on the knee after a thor ough examination, the spokesman said. Gaspard will begin conditioning drills Wednesday. He missed the two-a-day drills, which ended Tuesday. Texas opens its season at Mi ami Sept. 21. Bayli WACO <A»)—The Baylor Bears started intense preparation for their opener Sept. 15 against the Oklahoma Sooners and will play with a rash of nagging injuries. Dennis DeLoach, No. 1 defense end from Houston is in the infir mary with the flu. A bruised shoulder kept fullback Pat Mc Neil of Killeen and Gary Lacy of San Angelo out of contact work along with defensive tackle Phil Terry of Houston, who had a pulled neck muscle. FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. <A>)— The Arkansas Razorbacks worked for two hours under rainy skies Tuesday and Coach Frank Broyles said he didn't mind the wetness. “It's the first chance to prac tice in the rain this fall,” Broyles said, adding the Razorbacks need ed a drill for handling a wet ball. Sophomore Mike Kirkland con tinued his work as the No. 1 Razorback quarterback. Broyles said Kirkland would handle place kicking responsibilities, but soph omore Tommey Cheyne of Fort Smith probably would take care of punting duties. Texas Tech LUBBOCK <A*)—Texas Tech's Tuesday football practice was cut short by a rain and frequent lightning as Coach Jim Carlen sent the Red Raiders to the show ers early. Carlen said the Raiders will conduct a scrimmage Wednesday afternoon and again Saturday aft ernoon as they continue prepara tion for their season opener against Utah on Sept. 15. The House subcommittee on communications, which has sever al proposals before it to lift the blackouts, opens hearings on the issue on Congress' first day back from a month-long summer recess. Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn will testify before the sub committee Wednesday. Cage Coach Resigns at TSU HOUSTON (A>)_Lavalius Gor don, head basketball coach at Tex as Southern University for the past four seasons, resigned Tues day. Gordon listed personal reasons for his resignation submitted to Rod Paige, TSU athletic director. The Senate Commerce Commit tee approved a measure by Sen. John O.
