(Photo by Peter Leabo) Alice School Head Presented Award A portion of the Zachry Engi neering Building has been used in a research project funded by Silbrico, Inc., a Hodgkins, 111., in sulation firm. Dr. William B. Ledbetter, pro fessor of civil engineering at TAMU, has been monitoring tem perature sensors in the roof of the structure to evaluate the ef fectiveness of the insulation ma terials manufactured by Silbrico. Monitoring of temperatures was accomplished by measuring resist ance to sensors placed in three lo cations in the roof. The project has been operated continuously since the large structure opened early last year. Inside temperatures in the building have been maintained at a constant level between 70 and 75 degrees while roof tempera tures ranged from 20 degrees to more than 140 degrees. Five resistance thermometers were placed at each location, with two of them being permanently installed during building construc tion. “We have found the insulation to perform as the company ex pected,” Dr. Ledbetter said. “They wanted the study made to eval uate their product in this envi ronment, and it seems to be hold ing up very well.” port continued monitoring. Alice Schools Superintendent Dewey Smith has been presented the first Community Education Leadership award at A&M. Made at the School Administra tors and Supervisors Conference, the award cites Smith’s leadership in setting up the Alice Commu nity Education Program and spreading information about its success. It had more than 2,500 participants in the last school year. Dr. J. W. Edgar, Texas com missioner of education, presented Smith the award. The award will be an annual one. Dr. Robert Berridge, direc tor of the TAMU Center for Com munity Education, said Smith was the hands-down choice for the in augural presentation. Smith told Edgar and confer ence participants the plaque was earned by Alice citizens and will be located for their benefit. The Alice ISD, under Smith’s guidance, was the first to initiate community education in Texas. He met with Dr. Tom Pope, Region II Education Service Cen ter director, and Berridge ini tially to get information about the community involvement project. It was shared with the Alice dis trict’s Administrators Council and received unanimous approval. The Alice program accelerated after Smith asked a group of cit- MOTOR CROS RACES! Texas Moto! A door-to-door survey was conducted by lay people to assess Alice citizens’ wants and needs. Berridge also credited Smith with leadership in sharing Alice’s story with other educators. MSC Needs Local Bands Local bands are being sought for Memorial Student Center summer dances. “Any group that is interested should contact us at the Student Program office,” noted Shirley Ashom. The MSC office phone is 845-1515. The MSC summer directorate plans three more dances, possibly more. “We’ve had good turnouts for earlier dances,” she added. “A group would get good exposure.” FOR BEST RESULTS TRY BATTALION CLASSIFIED 4^ FREE Aa AT THE KRUEGER-DUNN DINING ROOM EACH SATURDAY & SUNDAY FROM 7 A.
