J. Foyt of Houston for 86 laps be fore Foyt’s Chevy burst into flames. Unser’s first place at a speed of 153.22 m.p.h. was good for $15,962 while Johncock claimed $5,704 for his victory. Unser pulled away from Gary Bettenhausen. and Mike Mosley after a yellow flag was raised following clearing of debris from the track. Bettenhausen finished second, Mosley third and Johnny Ruther ford fourth. The crowd greeted the finish with boos, believing Unser had taken unfair advantage when the flag was listed. He pulled out to a 10- or 12-car lead before starting the last two laps. Bettenhausen made an effort to catch him and closed to within two car lengths at the finish. Under United States Auto Club rules, the lead car is permitted to set the pace on the last lap of a yellow flag. On that lap, Unser pulled away to his lead, setting a fast pace. Bobby Unser, Al’s brother, led the first 68 laps before going out with a broken piston. There were numerous yellow flags but only one accident. Billy Vukovich spun on the 76th lap and hit a wall. He was uninjured. The late model stock car race was all Foyt and Johncock, with Roger McCluskey making a couple of challenges before falling back. When Foyt went out, McClus- ky moved into second, although the winner appeared to let up on the last couple of laps, winning by three seconds. Ramo Stott of Keokuk, Iowa was third while Clarence Lovell of San Antonio was fourth. The average speed of the Stock er was 133.48 m.p.h.
