Russo, weeping at one point as he spoke of the suffering of the Vietnamese, testified in his own defense Monday, telling how Daniel Ellsberg enlisted him to copy the Pentagon papers. Russo explained, how he and Ellsberg became close friends, drawn together by their increas ing doubts about the validity of U.S. policies in Vietnam. He told of their days together in Vietnam working as researchers on gov ernment projects for the Rand Corp. After Russo left Rand in early 1969, he said, he and Ellsberg continued seeing each other so cially, frequently talking about the war. At one such talk Russo said, had come to much the same con clusion.” Ellsberg, he said, mentioned a “study he was reading” which revealed similar conclusions. Later, Ellsberg suggested copy ing the papers, Russo said. “One morning he called me up and asked if I was going to be home and said he would like to see me. He came over shortly after the call. “Dan said, ‘you know that study I told you about ... I want to get it out. Can you arrange to “I remarked to Dan that I had seen a very definite pattern of lying and deception and altera tion of facts by the U.S. govern ment in Vietnam . . . Dan said he Xerox it? Do you know anyone who has a Xerox machine?’ I said, ‘Yes. I’ll ti-y to arrange it.’” By nightfall, on that day in October 1969, Russo said copying began at an advertising agency in Hollywood where Linda Sinay Resnick, Russo’s friend, had a copying machine. The govemment prosecutor im mediately began trying to chal lenge Russo’s testimony. Earlier, Russo began weeping as he told jurors the story of a North Vietnamese while inter viewing captured prisoners for a research study. Russo, calling the prisoner “the strongest man I ever met,” drop ped his head and wiped his eyes Bulletin Board TONIGHT New Braunfels Hometown Club will have its picture taken in front of the Academic Building at 7:30 p.m. Meteorology Wives’ Club will hear a talk on health food by Rhoada Poenisch at 2604 Morris Lane at 7:30 p.m. A&M Wheelmen will meet in Room 3D of the Memorial Stu dent Center at 7:30 p.m. American Society for Engineer ing Education will hear Edward P. Then, laughing through his tears, he said “See, even now when I talk about it, it comes back to me.” The 36-year-old defendant, on trial with Ellsberg, told the story to illustrate the experiences which transformed him from an “establishment” researcher on government projects to a vehe ment antiwar activist. He admitted to jurors that he helped Ellsberg copy the Penta gon papers study of the Vietnam war in 1969, but said he had never seen the documents before copy ing them, and indicated he did not know their contents. He told jurors of his disillu sionment with the results of his work in Vietnam. He said he sub mitted one report to the Air Force which he felt was ignored. It was a report on the use of “antipersonnel weapons” which frequently killed civilians. “I was kind of secretly hoping that the Air Force, when they saw how bad these things were, would stop using them. But I think I was very naive.” He said the use of those weapons subse quently increased. Noon Forum Slates Calvert For Wednesday Robert W.
