Hydrofoils studied as powerboat aid Low-cost, detachable hydro foils have been studied by an A&M aerospace engineering stu dent as an accessory for the fam ily powerboat. Jimmy L. Moore of Corpus Christi determined that non- steerable hydrofoils could be manufactured and marketed for $150 to $200. An airplane wing-like struc ture attached to a boat hull amid- ship and on the transom, the hy drofoil lifts a moving craft clear of the watex 1 . “Hydrofoils decrease the drag of a boat since less area is in contact with the water,” Moore explained. “They thus save fuel and add to the speed of the boat. Foils also make a smoother ride in choppy water because at lift speeds the hull rides above waves.” Moore’s study was reported in an aero seminar course instruct ed by Dr. Charles A. Rodenber- gex\ The student engineer’s sur vey revealed that several compa nies offer hydrofoil boats but only one had a set that could be attached to a boat. “This set was not detachable and cost over $400,” Moore stat ed. Ease of installation and detach ment was his prime design con cern. The main Moore foil would attach at six points on the sides and a special center attachment on the keel. Attach bolts would serve as shear pins. Aggie basketball team signs three recruits A&M basketball coach Shelby Metcalf has announced the sign ing of three junior college players to letters of intent.
