Fowler named head of new research centei Dr. Stewart Fowler Dr. Stewart H. Fowler, head of the Mississippi State University Animal Science Department, has been named resident director of research at the newly established A&M Research and Extension Center at Uvalde. Dr. H. O. Kunkel, dean of the A&M College of Agriculture and acting director of the Texas Ag ricultural Experiment Station, said Fowler’s appointment is ef fective August 1. “We feel very fortunate to ob tain an outstanding administra tor and educator of Dr. Fowler’s stature,” the dean said. “He has demonstrated his ability in a number of important positions and will give positive direction to our staff at the new Research and Extension Center at Uvalde.” Kunkel said Fowler is well known in livestock circles and is no stranger to Texas. The scientist holds a BS de gree in animal husbandry from the University of Florida (1947), and a master’s degree in animal breeding and production from Alabama’s Auburn University (1950). His doctoral degree in physi ology of reproduction came in 1954 from A&M, where he served as an instructor in animal indus try. From A&M, Fowler went to the University of Maryland in the mid-1950’s to teach swine husbandry and livestock market ing. He also conducted swine ex tension activities around the state and was assistant coach of the meats judging teams. Next came service at Washing ton State University, where he was animal breeder and swine and sheep specialist. He also taught breeds, swine husbandry, animal breeding and advanced genetics. Fowler was appointed profes sor of animal science at Louisi ana State University in 1958 as sheep and horse specialist, with teaching responsibilities in repro- ductiort, livestock grading, and sheep and horse production. In 1961, he assumed charge of LSU’s purebred beef cattle oper ations. He was named head of the Mississippi State University Ani mal Science Department in 1969, where he taught beef cs';. ence and livestock marlej addition to his admiijj, duties.
