THE AGGIES tied the Owls for the runnerup spot in their own meet and finished one slot behind the second place Owls in last week’s Border Olympics. Thomas was pleased with the effort of the team in the Laredo meet and especially the perform ance of freshmen Rockie Woods, Kelvin Korver and Curtis Mills. Woods ran a 21.8 in the 220 for a third place finish while Korver was third in the discuss at 158-1 and Mills was fifth in the 440 at 47.6. I 4 t! SWIMMING The hills of Arkansas will pro vide the scenery for the confer ence swimming meet today, Fri day and Saturday as the six teams will be chasing peren nial champion SMU. The Mustangs have swum to the conference title the past near dozen years and no one seems capable of derailing their express this time. Coach Art Adamson’s swim mers will bring a 3-4 mark into the meet with wins over Rice, Eastern New Mexico and John Brown University. The losses have come against Texas Tech, Arlington State, SMU and Texas. TENNIS McNeese State College of Lou isiana is in town today to chal lenge Coach Omar Smith’s tennis team. Smith thinks the team will be ready for the match and that they have been making progress. “The team is really shaping up,” Smith said, “they are play ing better all the time and think they are hitting their peak.” Hardin-Simmons comes to town Saturday to challenge the Aggies and then Tuesday A&M travels to Houston to meet Rice in the season’s first conference confron tation. “Rice just has to be the confer ence favorite this year,” Smith said of Tuesday’s rival, “they are really loaded in talent.” Jon Ragland is rated as the Aggies’ best but gets strong sup port from Bruce Crumley, Joe Tillerson, Mike Hickey, Marcus Beleck and Jerry Oliver. GOLF Coach Henry Ransom’s Aggie golfers are in Lake Charles, La., today and tomorrow for the Lake Charles Tournament. They had a scheduled match with Oklahoma, Baylor and North Texas Monday and Tuesday con- celled by the weather. Leading the charge for the defending conference champions in the Louisiana tourney will be such stars as seniors Terry Arch er, Skip Bresk and John Buffin and junior Bill Wade. Other mem bers of the team are sophomores Reggie Majors, Eric Brand, Duke Butler, Richard Ellis, Mike Je rome and Tom Paul. Twenty-eight freshmen football players will work both ways, Hagan expected to name his starting offensive and defensive teams by Saturday. The Owls will work four days a week and complete their 20- day session in the Blue-Gray game the night of April 27. The Southwest Conference allows 36 days to get in the alloted 20. Hagan’s main goals will be to fill the gaps at running back, defensive end and linebacker— positions that suffered the most from graduation. ★ ★ ★ FORT WORTH LP> — Sports figures gather here Thursday to honor retiring Texas Associated Press Sports Editor Harold V. Ratliff of Dallas. The AP veteran retires May 1 after 32 years with the news service. The Cowboys now have signed 15 players for the year, five of them free agents.
