WC Teams Have Height, Experience 'ut Can 9 t Beat Non-League Foes) By HAROLD V. RATLIFF Associated Press Sports Writer OPEN YOUR ACCOUNT NOW! 4V2?« Annifin Paid Quarterly an INSURED SAVINGS FIRST FEDERAL SAVINGS end LOAN ASSOCIATION 2913 Texes Ave. The Southwest Conference has 103 basketball players. Thirty- 3 nine of them average better than 6 feet 5 inches in height. Twelve of them soar to 6-7, three 6-8 and two 6-9. It often has been said that there are not enough boys from other areas —* that they can’t depend on Texas and Arkansas youngsters to get the job done. Well, there are 30 from other states, ranging from Kentucky, Alabama, West Virginia, Illinois and California. It would seem that the material ought to be there to make a good national showing: height, experi ence, players from the basketball hot beds. But it doesn’t come out that way. The conference this year has made probably its worst intersec tional record in more than 50 years of the game. The league has won only a little better than half its games against the out siders. The teams have trouble aplenty just beating each other. The race is usually as close as a grammer school boy’s first shave. Now why can’t the conference compete nationally, with the thousands of boys from the high schools of Texas and Arkansas, plus boys from more than a dozen other states, furnishing the ros ters? There are several versions. The major reason stems from the fact that the boys don’t play year- around basketball as in other sec tions. The weather is so good the boys play outdoor sports like football, baseball, golf, tennis, whereas in other areas — the big basketball centers — the BATTALION CLASSIFIED Political (Announcements Subject to action of the Dem ocratic Primary May 7, 1966 For Congressman, ,Sixth ; Congressional District OLIN E. This applies to the boys just coming up — 10 to 13 years of age — the time in their lives when they must practice basket ball if they are to develop in a sport that requires great skill, obtained only through constant practice. But better times are coming, regardless of whether the boys play all the time at tender ages as they do in other areas. The first Negro in Southwest Conference basketball came this year. James Cash of Fort Worth is on the Texas Christian fresh man team and is a fine prospect. There undoubtedly will be more next year and the number should increase to a sizeable lot within the coming four or five years. It is an established fact that the Negro boy is a better basket ball player. He is more agile, has more rhythmic movement, can jump Higher, can move faster. Negroes play in all the areas that rank high in basketball. In the south they are just now mov ing into competition.
