Bill Orth) Aggies Play Host To Rice In Twinbili; Baylor Next A&M’s league-leading: baseball team gets back into action this afternoon on Kyle Field with a doubleheader with the Rice Owls. Both games will be seven inning affaii’s. The Aggies are 7-2 in Southwest Conference play and are a half game ahead of defending champion Texas who have a 6-2 SWC mark. Rice has a 2-5 SWC record. With only four games remain ing in SWC play after the Rice twin bill, the Aggies have a good chance to take the flag for the first time since 1959 when Coach Tom Chandler was a rookie SWC coach. Four Games Remain The remaining four contests are with the top teams in the confer ence, Texas and Baylor. Earlier in the season, the Cadets downed the Owls in Houston, 5-2, Last week Rice dropped a pair to the TCU Horned Frogs. Ed Singley and Chuck McGuire, the Aggies’ top two pitchers, will probably start on the hill for A&M against the Owls. Singley, who is undefeated this season, has com piled a 5-0 mark in season play and 3-0 in SWC competition. Mc Guire has a 3-1 in season and 2-1 in conference play. His only loss was to the hands of the Baylor Bears by a score of 2-0. Johnson Leads in Batting Shortstop Dave Johnson con tinues to lead the Aggie regulars in batting with a .362 average in season play and a .393 in the SWC. Johnson is tied for third with Texas’ Chuck Knutson in SWC batting. The leader is Baylor’s Tommy Ledbetter, who has a .429 average. The Bears from Baylor invade Aggieland on May 2 and May 3 for a crucial battle. Aggie kegler Jim Butler cap tured the high individual series championship by rolling a 648, or an average of 216 per game for three games. Another Aggie team member, John Tinney, was second in the All-Events field, rolling a total of 1,725. Butler was third in that field with 1,675. The high individual singles title went to Paul Stannard of Oshkosh, who rolled a 239. The National Championship was won by Mankato State College of Minnesota. On a point system, Mankato’s bowlers had a total of 85.24. The fourth place Aggie col lected 80.11 points. Each of the seven teams entered rolled six individual team match games and three games for total pinfall. Scoring was based on one point for every 100 pins, and one point for each game won in the six match games. The seven teams competing for the NIBA championship title were A&M, Mankato, St. Mary’s College of Minnesota, University of Wichi ta, Indiana Tech, Arizona State and Oshkosh College of Wisconsin.
