Aggies Play Host To Rice
In Twinbili; Baylor Next
A&M’s league-leading: baseball
team gets back into action this
afternoon on Kyle Field with a
doubleheader with the Rice Owls.
Both games will be seven inning
affaii’s.
The Aggies are 7-2 in Southwest
Conference play and are a half
game ahead of defending champion
Texas who have a 6-2 SWC mark.
Rice has a 2-5 SWC record.
With only four games remain
ing in SWC play after the Rice
twin bill, the Aggies have a good
chance to take the flag for the
first time since 1959 when Coach
Tom Chandler was a rookie SWC
coach.
Four Games Remain
The remaining four contests are
with the top teams in the confer
ence, Texas and Baylor.
Earlier in the season, the Cadets
downed the Owls in Houston, 5-2,
Last week Rice dropped a pair to
the TCU Horned Frogs.
Ed Singley and Chuck McGuire,
the Aggies’ top two pitchers, will
probably start on the hill for A&M
against the Owls. Singley, who is
undefeated this season, has com
piled a 5-0 mark in season play
and 3-0 in SWC competition. Mc
Guire has a 3-1 in season and 2-1
in conference play. His only loss
was to the hands of the Baylor
Bears by a score of 2-0.
Johnson Leads in Batting
Shortstop Dave Johnson con
tinues to lead the Aggie regulars
in batting with a .362 average in
season play and a .393 in the SWC.
Johnson is tied for third with
Texas’ Chuck Knutson in SWC
batting. The leader is Baylor’s
Tommy Ledbetter, who has a .429
average.
The Bears from Baylor invade
Aggieland on May 2 and May 3
for a crucial battle.
