How many times have you seen a picture of an auto accident in a newspaper or been at the scene of an accident your self and thought, “Well, that could never happen to me. Accidents only happen to other people.” You don’t know how wrong you might be; and the people who were wrong are no longer around to warn you about your mistaken attitude. Y~ou don’t have to be the driver of a car to get killed, or go further, you don’t even hav# td be . in a • vehicle, to, be .the victim of au .automobile accident. If you are skeptical at these warnings, look at the cases of some students who preceded you. As they swerved past another car, she lost control of the car and it lurched off the highway, rolling two and a half times. Dart’s convertible rolled over him, crushing his body. He died on the way to the hospital. His date suffered severe scalp injuries but lived. James E. Sarran was serving coffee to students guarding the oonfire when he lost his life. An oncoming car pinned him between the coffee truck and broke both his legs, arms and his pelvis. Suffering from a concussion, he died on Thanksgiving Day, 1955, having remained unconscious from the time of his injury three days earlier. Calvin Reed was killed Nov. 16, 1958, when another auto went through a stop sign and smashed into his car. One of Reed’s com panions suffered a punctured lung, four broken ribs and lacerations. William Sidney Rogers was kill ed almost instantly on the night of Oct. 20, 1957, when a car cross ed the center stripe of Highway 6 and collided head on with his pick up. There were no skid marks to show that Rogers had a chance to avert the wreck which took his life. Hiding your head in the sand like an ostrich won’t help. An accident can happen to you and tomorrow you might be dead. FOUR AGGIES (Continued From Page 1) campus. The question of “Who won’t be here when we get back?” is a timely one. There is no correct or concrete figure on the number of A&M stu dents who have been injured in traffic accidents this semester. At least one accident a week puts two or three Ags in the hospital. Patrolman Wynn Williams of the Texas Highway Patrol summed it up pretty good. “The trouble is that most people figure that it is going to be some one else involved in a traffic acci dent. All it takes is just one little bit of carelessness for an accident to happen. And it’s the person who didn’t think it was going to happen to him that is right in the middle of it.” College Station Police To Add Holiday Duties College Station’s police depart ment, along with law enforcement agencies throughout Texas and the United States, has announced a change in routine for the up coming Christmas holidays. Chief of Police Lee Norwood iisclosed today his force will in crease rounds during the night patrol by removing a man from iuty at the North Gate. Each man on the force will be working extra hours, Chief Nor wood said. He added that it rtiight jecome necessary to use pi^ivate automobiles for patrol duty be cause of the current shortage of patrol cars. Norwood has asked that citi zens of the Bryan-College Station area report traffic violations and license numbers of culprits when possible. He also reminded people to be watchful for looters in both the Bryan and College Station ousiness districts. In regard to holiday traffic, the chief said, “Slow down. You will live longer and so will others on the road with you.” W' im m r,;,- '■v >aff! r Grim Reminder A family of five lost their lives in this crumbled wreck, how standing as a grim re minder to students leaving the campus for the Christ mas holidays that “Speed Kills.” The Battalion and the Student Senate spon sored erection of the tragic monument on the main drive at the east gate. (Photo by Johnny Herrin) DEATH LURKS ON HIGHWAYS (Continued From Page 1) the state License and Weight Ser vice and the Motor Vehicle In spection Service will assist regular law enforcement officers on state highways during the Yule holiday, Col. Homer Garrison Jr., director of the Department of Public Safety, has announced. Special effort will be placed on keeping the highway death rate be low 1960’s 2,254 total, Garrison aid. Patrolmen will be working overtime hours, leaves will be can celed and special attention will be paid law violators. These law enforcement officers and added volunteers will have the odds against them, at least accord ing to staggering statistics com piled on United States highways in 1961. Last year 38,200 persons lost their lives in auto mishaps in the U. S., while another 1,400,000 were injured. Property costs were a staggering $6,500,000,000. Fifty-two per cent of these acci dents occurred at night, while 87 per cent of the mishaps were directly attributable to law viola tions. The largest percentage of fatal accidents was recorded by the 20- 24 year old age group, with 17 per cent, and the 25-29 year olds were a distant second with 13.2 per cent. These figures, along with the fact that four A&M students have already died in auto mishaps this year, have caused understandable concern here among members of the faculty, staff and student body. As Dean of Students James P. Hannigan put it, “We have soupded Silver Taps too often already this year and an excess number of stu dents have spent time in the hos pital or had narrow estapes in traffic accidents. If we can all re turn after the holidays, any ef forts will certainly have been worthwhile.” NOTICE The MSC Bowling Lanes will remain open during the Christnuis Holidays for your convenience at the hours listed below: Thursday Dec. 21 5 p. m. - 10 p. m.
