Thursday, December 6,1951 THE BATTALION Page 5 ' Dallas Morning News Selects Aggie Salyer For Linebacking Honors By GUS BECKER Battalion Sports Writer Little Johnny Salyer was named top linebacker of the week by The Dallas Morning News yesterday, receiving recognition he justly deserves. The five foot eight inch lad was credited with six unas sisted tackles and nine assisted as he was a thorn in the side of the Longhorn offense all afternoon. Salyer hails from Austin which is the Steer stronghold, and it looks like the Texas Athletic department missed a bet wh£n it overlooked the boy that saved the day for the ’ Aggies with his pass interception in the last quarter. Coaches Directors Meet Coaches and Athletic directors of Southwest Conference Schools will hold their winter session in Dallas this week. Controversy is expected over the 12-point “de-emphasis” program recommended by the NCAA’s policy-making council. Among the recommendations, the out-of-season practice, post season games and financial grants to athletes, are expected to draw the most fire. SMU and A&M have been rapped this year by a New York judge about the number of scnolarships offered. SMU gives 154 while A&M gives 120. The Conference limits the amount of aid to athletes but there is no limit to the number of scholarships. The revision of the free substitution rule to elitninate the two platoon system will probably not be passed as every team in the SWC uses smite variation of the platoon system. Aggie Schedule Rough While these directors and coaches are meeting, they ought to look at the Aggies conference schedule and see what they can do about eliminating at least two of the three home coming tilts A&M has to play every other year. It’s hard enough to beat a SWC school on their own stomping grounds without having them fired up with the homecoming spirit. A&M played three homecoming games, TCU, Arkansas, and Rice, and lost all three. We guess that this gives the Aggies the distinction of playing in more homecoming games than any other school in SWC and probably in the nation. (See BOWL CONTESTANTS, Page 6) A&M Consolidated Bi-District Champ. i Leigh ton, Ha UDuel in Regional Battle Bi-District Champions of Districts 23-24B, the Consolidated Tigers meet (he Sugarland Gators for the Regional title Friday night in Sugarland. The Tigers have won every conference game with the exception of the Hempstead game which they won on Penetrations. It looks like a real battle Fri day night at Sugarland when the Bi-District champions, A&M Con solidated Tigers square off against the Bi-District champions, Sugar- land Gators. All the Tigers will be in tip-top shape for the contest with the ex ception of David Carroll a reservfe tackle who is in bed following a tonsilectomy. A duel is expected between Jerry Leighton, Tiger’s ace backfield star, and the leading scorer in his district, and Kenneth Hall a soph omore fullback for the Gators who scored 22 of the Sugarland club’s 34 points against the Corrigan Bulldogs to win their Bi-District title. Coach 0. V. Chafin of the Tigers, said this morning, “if we can stop their fullback, a goodj boy named Hall, we’ve got a good chance to win the game.” Chafin added,” they’re (Gators) bigger than we are, but we are a little faster. If we were here, I know we would win, but playing on their home field it will be rough.” Gametime is set for 8 p. m. at the Sugarland field and the game promises to be a thriller from start to finish. 0.
