Internal ri valry and Sghting once marred the event whose original purpose was to help pre serve the Ag- gieSpirit. Instead of celebrating be- a part of Texas A&M, most at tending Monday night were only worried about what dorm's flag they were going to attempt to steal. Last year the fighting started at All-U night and continued a couple of weeks later at Midnight Yell. They always say, "If it happens once it's a tradition* So since it's now tradi tional, why fight the fighting? Why not organize it? Instead of having fights breaking autall over campus it could be IVrestlemania on Kyle Field. Every tegand non-reg dorm would be rep resented by its three best wrestlers who would then battle it out in three rings set in the north endzone. Everyone could put their aggression into rooting their dorm onto victory instead of getting bludgeoned trying tosteai dorm trinkets. Just think in 1994 All-University \ight could be like this ... Chancellor William Mobley: Hunk you Coach Slocum. Now for See Winder/Page 8 Mrtr. r A&M coaches pleased with Groff’s hiring By William Harrison The Battalion Texas A&M athletic director Wally Groff, who was appointed Tuesday, re ceived praise and positive response from A&M's coaches after his hiring was an nounced. "I couldn't be happier and I couldn't concur more with the selection that they made in Wally Groff - he's an outstand ing choice," A&M head football coach R.C. Slocum said. "I am very pleased that the university after researching a number of candidates around the country came to the realiza tion that we had a guy here that has worked for 20 years in this department. He knows the ins and outs of it, has been a loyal worker and is very qualified for this job." A&M basketball coach Tony Barone said he supported the decision based on Groff's work habits and what Groff had done for the athletic department as inter im athletic director. "It's an absolutely tremendous deci sion," Barone said. "Anytime that you have any dealings in the athletic depart ment, what you find out is there is a guy always behind the scenes, who has an in tegral affect in what goes on. Wally was that guy. "He is not looking to be in the lime light or anything like that." A&M women's associate athletic di rector and basketball coach Lynn Hickey said Groff was the correct choice for Kyle Burnett/I'HE Battalion Southwest Conference commissioner Steve Hatchell (far left) looks on as A&M president William Mobley (center) congratu lates new athletic director Wally Groff on his hiring Tuesday. "The more that we looked at the (reference) materials that came in, it was clear that Wally was the best choice even with all the people on the outside. "Transition-wise, losing someone like John David (Crow, the previous athletic director) and to be able to keep things going with Wally is just a good thing." With season opener just three days away, Slocum says team is ready for LSU By Matthew J. Rush The Battalion The Texas A&M football team's season opener against Louisiana State is only three days away and head coach R.C. Slocum said he is upbeat and ready to get the 1993 football season underway. Slocum described his team's attitude as excited and portrayed the team as much more prepared for the 1993 season than they were for the 1992 year. "We've had similar workouts as last year," Slocum said. "This year, I am much more at ease because we are better pre pared at the quarterback position. We're definitely better off than last year." Slocum did not express similar senti ments about a marquee position on the other side of the ball. "We've got substantially more ques tions about the defense than last year," Slocum said. "The big question is who will emerge as the big-play linebacker." Senior Steve Solari was counted on to take over for the departed Marcus Buck- ley but he has been slowed by a ham string injury that has Slocum worried. "Steve is going to take it day by day." Slocum said. "I am concerned with his hamstring and I would say he is question able for Saturday's game." As for the Saturday contest, Slocum said LSU and their enthusiasm usually presents a tough challenge ^or the 'ason opener, but it's one the Aggies are ready to tackle. "It's a big game for both teams," Slocum said. "LSU is always fired up, re gardless of who they're playing. They've got a new coach and a new system and we don't know what they're going to See Slocum/Page 8 ^ i ‘i IX liw n. ’ i si pus ta 31 1993 1993.
