If You Have Something To Sell Remember: Classified Can Do It • EASY •AFFORDABLE • EFFECTIVE Call 845-0569 Today For More Information Continued from Page 1 what opportunities are avail able to us with respect to having a first class facility," he said. Hatchell said, "We're working with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to try and get the special events center. With coach Barone (A&M's head men's basketball coach) 1 think it's the right time and the effort's correct. We're going to go all the way." Groff started his career at A&M in 1966 as athletic depart ment business manager. He worked his way up in the department by serving as assis tant athletic director for business affairs, associate athletic director for finance, and as interim athletic director in 1981-82 before Jackie Sherrill took over. In 1988, Crow promoted him to associate athletic director. "I'm truly honored to be named athletic director at my alma mater," Groff said. "It has been a labor of love working for Texas A&M the past 27 years, and I pledge to continue our advancement in all areas of intercollegiate athletics. "I'm looking forward to meet ing exciting new challenges and the opportunity to lead this de partment," he said. "We have the personnel, the facilities and the resources for all of our programs to be top 10 con tenders, and I want to encourage our coaches and staff to make goals for themselves and their teams that are consistent with goals of our athletic department and university." Gage said, "The priority is to continue the leadership of bring ing the kind of excellence and recognition to the athletic pro gram and the academic program. 1 believe we're well on our way to do that." TCA Continued from Page 1 Valley Broadcasting Company, isn't charging Waco cable opera tors for its carriage. "Waco has more bargaining power than Bryan-College Station because they have access to more than one CBS channel," Rogers said. "KBTX is doing this simply because they can do it." Baronet said 30 cents is a rea sonable price to pay to ensure free broadcast. "Suppose free broadcast goes away and pay-per-view domi nates," Baronet said. "Cable will charge you $30 for a football game and I'm asking 30 cents for 120 football games, news, public information shows and public service announce ments," he said. "Is 30 cents too much?" He said KBTX is open to nego- open tiations with TCA and said the ca ble company should offer KBTX non-monetary alternatives. "They could put us on their least popular channel or even put us on 'a la carte.' Rogers said 'a la carte,' is an option cable subscribers have of adding a program for an addition al price to their cable package. TCA offers TNT a la carte for 85 cents a month. "TNT has a rating of about two or three," Baronet said. "KBTX has a rating of 30. Is it unreason able to ask for a third of the mon ey for 14 times the rating?" Baronet said if an agreement is not reached by Oct. 6, KBTX still will be on the public airwaves. "You can always get KBTX on a simple rabbit ear antenna," Baronet said. "Ninety eight per cent of the Bryan-College Station area will be able to pick-up KBTX almost the same as if it were on cable." Journalism Professor Mark Dempsey said the cable/broad caster wars are a national contro versy. Another feud is currently brewing in Dallas between local cable operators and Channel 5. He said new advances in fiber optics within the next five years will cause major changes in cable and broadcast companies. Through fiber optics, people with telephones and televisions can dial a TV program they want to see without waiting for its origi nal broadcast time, Dempsey said. "With the Baby Bell companies entering the picture and more op tions available, cable operators and broadcast companies are go ing to have to find new ways to compete," Dempsey said. Rogers and Baronet said KBTX and TCA will continue negotia tions until Oct. 6 and hope an agreement will be reached. Welcome Back Aggies! Avoid standing in line!
