Multicultural Continued from Page 1 Morgan Reynolds, professor of economics, who said, "It threatens what a university is about, namely the free exchange of ideas." "Left-wing faculty members could see this an ideological gain that will increase their numbers," he said. Reynolds said many people wanted such a course implemented university-wide, and said it debases the academic environment of free inquiry. Help Wanted HELP! "They're trying to make it into a re-education camp, rather thana college of liberal arts, and ultimately dictate what to think instead of how to think," he said. Reynolds was referring to a motion currently before the Faculty Senate calling for the creation of a similar campus-wide requirement A decision will be made in the fall after more study is conducted on the subject. During the meeting, several minority faculty members affirmed the existence of racial tension on A&M's campus. They mentioned thatal though the decision may cause further uneasiness, it would be neces sary to maintain future racial and ethnic relations and to ensure that the problem "couldn't just be swept under the rug." "They're trying to make it into a re-education camp, rather than a college of liberal arts." -Dr. Morgan Reynolds, professor of economics Dr. Richard Stadelmann, associate professor of philosophy and hu manities, and one of the chief opponents of the requirement, said the resolution wouldn't unite the University, but it would do the opposite, The end result would be hostility, loss of contributions and damage to A&M's conservative reputation and legislative standing, he said. "The desire to create harmony is admirable, but the results will be the opposite," Stadelmann said. Recently, Texas A&M University Interim President, Dr. Dean Gage, said 'multiculturalism' isn't the most accurate decision of the idea, which he said is more along the lines of changing demographics and globalization. Gage said whether A&M would attract more minorities since the passing of the requirement would be hard to predict. "I think that we're going to very clearly increase substantially the number of minority students this fall... because of the many types of educational programs maintained throughout the University and the support networks and concentrated efforts that the University has pul forward to increase the numbers," Gage said. Gage said the goal is to reflect in time the state's population and de mographic changes. Tanya Williams, chairwoman of the A&M Black Awareness Com mittee, said she was pleased with the council's decision, but was not surprised at the amount of controversy it generated. "I am really glad they passed it," she said. "They're claiming stu dents may not want it, but it is a step in the right direction." Williams said campus relations should be based on respect, not only for other cultures, but for men, women and other organizations as well. "It is taking a step out of the comfort zone and experiencing some thing new," Williams said. "We can do academic work all we want, but we need to experience it for ourselves." Present and future students, as well as graduates of A&M, would benefit from the requirement, she said. "It is a chance to go out and show society what we've learned,” Williams said.
