January 24,1991 Trout Fishing to play this weekend Texas' eclectic rockers Trout Fish ing in America come to Bryan-Coliege Station this weekend for several shows at various locations. T.F.I.A. will be playing Friday and Saturday night at the Front Porch Cafe, and will also appear there on Saturday afternoon for a special kids’ show. In addition, Trout Fishing is scheduled for a live set at Marooned Records Saturday at noon. At the heart of Trout Fishing’s music is the duo of Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood. Grimwood plays string bass, bass guitar, and keyboards, while Idlet joins in on acoustic guitar. The tunes will range from a slew of covers to many original songs, all per formed with a dash of humor. The band has played in College Station several times since its forma tion in 1979, and developed quite a few fans locally. Look for Idlet and Grimwood to feel right at home in front of the crowd; they're veteran perform ers at such venues as childcare cen ters, federal penitentiaries, and col lege campuses. Their touring has taken them all over Texas, as well as into Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida and even Canada. Trout Fishing in America will play Trout Fishing in America many of their own songs, with such ti- compasses everything from Bob Mar- No matter what kind of music you’re ties as "Bad Neighborhood,” “Lori’s ley to Elvis Costello, from Little Feat to in the mood for, Trout Fishing will play Song” and “I’m Gonna Kill Myself For Hank Williams, from Van Morrison to some of it, and they'll play it with a few Christmas.” Their cover material en- the Rolling Stones. laughs. Bouffant to play tonight Bryan-College Station funk fans will get a chance to see the hottest funk band in Texas now, Austin’s Bouffant Jellyfish, at the Front Porch Cafe on Thursday night. After capturing a dedicated live-show fol lowing and releasing Check My Boogman late in 1989, Bouffant Jellyfish continued to as cend the crowded ladder ir Austin’s club mu sic scene. They captureo the Austin Chroni cle's Best New Band award in 1989-90, and placed in the top ten in th other music cat egories. In June of 1990 they ised a second compilation, Six Month Shen Jfe, before los ing vocalist David McIntyre and reforming with George Mack in his spot. The band has devel oped fans in Texas’ major markets, and has performed as far away as New York City, in last year’s New Music Seminar. Bouffant’s style is definitive funk, which is in itself a mix of metal, rap, soul and punk. The five-man jam will likely turn the Front Porch Cafe into a sweaty slamfest with original tunes like “Yeah Ya Don’t,” "Shrimp and Chicken Jambo” and "Go and Tell Your Mother." Bouffant is a must-see for funk fans; they are clearly the most discussed funk band on the club scene in the state. But don’t go looking to sit back and enjoy the show; expect to get there and (as they say) "Surf the Funk Wave."
