Page 6 THE BATTALION FRIDAY, MARCH 2, 1979 Texas retail firms plan anti-blue law campaign United Press International DALLAS — Decrying Texas’ blue law as antiquated and arbi trary, spokesmen for 2,500 com panies that operate 4,000 retail stores in Texas Thursday announced plans for a campaign to convince the Legislature to repeal the statute that prohibits sale of certain merchan dise on Sunday. Lawrence M. Turner of Kroger Co. said participating firms will urge their customers to inundate legis lators with appeals for abolishing the, law. “Quite frankly we are tired of try ing to explain to customers what we ourselves don’t understand — why you can buy a hammer but not nails, a blank tape but not a record, shoelaces but not shoes, or beer but not a baby bottle in Texas on Sun days,” Turner said. Lawrence said he expects additional firms to join the Retailers for Repeal of the Blue Law in com ing weeks. law will be on mustering consumer opposition in the stores themselves. “We are tired of being asked to enforce a law that makes no sense, is difficult to interpret, and which most of our customers resent,” Turner said. Customers will be given flyers, forms and other items to assist them in communicating their views to legislators.
