The redheaded stepchild of Southern-fried blues rock borrowed the title track for this album from British alt-rocker David Gray, whose own recording of “Silver Lining” lasts for six minutes, and is long by radio standards, but not unjustifiably. Raitt’s extended version drones on for an extra 19 seconds — 19 sec onds of artistic butchery. Gray’s version demolishes Raitt’s reckless hack job. After all, it is his song. Borrowing so heavily from Gray was a mistake on Raitt’s part. This move forces lis teners to compare the artists to each other, and as the one adopting Gray's work, Raitt stands as the lesser of the two. The rest of the album is not much better. Raitt has talent as a singer and guitarist, but at times both seem superfluous on this disc. The lyrics she sings — she only wrote three of the tracks — have various meanings but lack any depth or exceptional storytelling. Maybe that is what happens after a person makes 17 albums. “I Can’t Help You Now” might be a bright spot in the collection as the song fuses under stated, fitting guitar parts with Raitt’s sultry vocals into a brutally honest, but not extrava gant oration. “Time Of Our Lives” is not terribly bad either, but all tracks on the disc seem ingen- uine. (Grade: C) —Thomas Phillips The Anniversary Your Majesty Vagrant Records Leave it to Vagrant Records to provide music fans with another band worthy of the $15 shelled out for a CD. The Anniversary is in a class all of its own with its second full-length album Your Majesty, which captures a hybrid sound of 1970s hippie rock and modern indie rock. With a combination of comfortable vocals, ruckus guitar breaks and timely, but off-beat drumming. Your Majesty has a unique, yet identifiable, sound. Adrianne Pope’s appro priate keyboard playing adds just enough flair to this album. Opening with “Sweet Marie,” listeners may have an instantaneous reaction: “groovy track.” With dreamy vocals mixed with a syn thesized chorus and pounding percussion, “The Death of the King” is another stand-out track on this album and provides a great sum mary of the band’s sound. The Anniversary added different flavors to each song while keeping a cohesive sound throughout the entire album. Josh Berwanger and Justin Roelofs, who both play vocals and guitar, are the minds behind the lyrics for Your Majesty. With songs dealing with regretful relationships in the third track, “Peace, Pain & Regret,” and leaving a love to discover oneself in “The Siren Sings,” Your Majesty, for the most part, has great songwriting and provides the listener with a heartfelt, uplifting journey. He has run in five marathons and Participated in an Ironman, which is a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike Zoul ride and a 26.2 mile run. With a finishing time of 13:22:11 in the Ironman, Gebke said the trick to Persevering is that “when you go tow. out there, you have to have the mentality that ‘you will finish.’” “[The Ironman] was the most painful experience of my life,” Gebke said. “Luckily, I had my good friend there to do it with me. Events of that distance are more mental than anything. If you go out there with an “I think I’ll try” attitude around mile 80 on the bike, thoughts of the marathon will start clouding your mind, and there is no way you'll want to start that.” Gebke, who has been running for the past seven years, said running is a means of release. “Running builds self-deter mination and motivation,” Gebke said. “And the more you run, the stronger your body as well as your mind becomes. And really, who wouldn’t love a stronger mind and body?” O Deposit!
