Lisa Novak Perfect Mess Novak/Martin Publishing Lisa Novak, a Houston native who has played the Houston music scene since 1995, will perform at the Northgate Music Festival at Texadelphia Saturday at 8:15 p.m. Listeners longing for honest lyrics and mature, smooth vocals are in for a treat. Novak's latest album, Perfect Mess, is the type of CD that turns a rainy day into a day of opportunity. The title track completely immerses listeners into Novak's world of folk/rock and country. 'Time of Day" displays more of Novak's honest lyrics that have been described as a mix of Lucinda Williams and Indigo Girls with a splash of Carly Simon. Every track on the album was written or co-written by the talented Novak, who also owns a hair salon in Houston's Montrose district. "Cluttered Life," a Mary Chapin Carpenter-like tune, and "Sometime" aie country-oriented. "Never Will" is a slower tune with; steady piano accompaniment and theses enth track, "Release Me," has comforting fiddles and floating vocals, and could easil! be a song by the Dixie Chicks. The last track "Over Again" confirms Is teners' suspicions that there is a songfoi every relationship on this album. (Grade: B-t-) —Lizette r~ Resendez Secret Agent 8 Secret Agent 8 008 Records Secret Agent 8's success will no longer be a secret. Those who have never heard of the band will soon be let in on the greatest secret of the Houston ska scene. This nine- member band has shared the stage with top ska acts like Reel Big Fish and the Skatalites. The first track, "Hoodlum," on Secret Agent 8, begins at the high-paced rate any ska album should and introduces the band's incredible horns. The second track, "Looking Ahead," has fun, tropical beats with a little bit of reggae. "Identity Crisis" displays big horns and wonderfully rushed lyrics, and "Number 4" begins with horn trills and finishes with; big bang. "On my Mind" is an obsessive love song and "Beer's OK" is a fun song that suddenll switches to Spanish during one verse. Every song on this album is filled witf horns, drums and phat beats. With sudu pumped-up mix of music, this band is sure to give one of the most energetn performances at the Northgate Musit Festival. We Fix Everything the issue of first amendment rights,” Sarandis said. “We are a student organization, no one is running for an official govern ment position.” The leaflet in question con tains the text “Who’s your daddy? Me. And I make damn cool T-shirts. Pimpin’ for the best damn class ... fightin’ Texas Aggie Class of 2004.” Sarandis said words such as “damn” and “hell” are inappropri ate, and that the trademark Aggie yell “beat the hell outta ...” would be censored from campaign materials. Dubberly said he spent about $30 on the leaflets, and could not afford to print another batch. “This may cost me the elec tion, but we really need to set this right,” Dubberly said. All campaign materials, including flyers, posters, and even gimmicks such as handing out mints or pencils, must be approved by the election commis sioner, Sarandis said. Candidates are advised not to buy campaign materials before they have been approved, Sarandis said, because expenditures on censored materi als will count against candidates’ spending limits. Sarandis defended the com mission’s censorship authority, and said because student govern ment is an independent si organization, the commission regulate how SGA chooses leaders without the Amendment constraints t apply to the University. More than 30 of the 125 can dates in the student election to submitted campaign material inappropriate content, Saranc said. In each case, the c revised the materials to meetco! mission standards and approved. SGA adviser Bobby Til said about $150,000 of stud;: government’s $450,000 comes from student fees. Student elections will be ki March 27-28. IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU!
