The Bruins look to end one of Texas A&M’s best seasons on record. The Aggies, coming off a solid match against the Eagles, advanced to the Sweet 16 group of the tournament for the third time in the program’s history. Andrea Starns, Heather Wiebe, Amber Childress and Heather Williams netted goals for the Aggies in front of the home town crowd at the Aggie Soccer Complex Saturday. Forward Heather Ragsdale leads the Ag gies’ scorers with 14 goals and nine assists for a total of 37 points, four points ahead of standout Kristen Strutz, who tallied 11 goals and 11 assists on the season, including two assists against Marquette. Goalkeeper Esther Thompson also recorded another shutout, giving her a total of 7.5 for the season. Thompson’s shutout of Marquette was the first by an Aggie team in the NCAA tournament. UCLA, coming off a 3-0 win over cross town rival University of Southern Califor nia, is led by a trio of Bruins, all with 30 points on the season. Sarah-Gayle Swanson leads the team with 13 goals and four as sists. Tracey Milburn has posted 12 goals on the season and has recorded six assists on the year. Boasting a .37 goals against average, UCLA goaltender CiCi Peterson tallied 12.5 shutouts on the season for the Bruins. The UCLA squad took care of Marquette during the regular season with a 5-1 victo ry on Oct. 6. UCLA, like the Aggies, was granted a first-round bye in the tournament. The young Aggie squad looks to put a blemish in the Bruins’ perfect 7-0 record at UCLA’s Drake Stadium. The Aggies are 6- 3 on the road this season. The winner of Sunday’s match will ad vance to the Elite 8 round of the tournament and face the winner of the Florida State vs. Clemson matchup in South Carolina. The Aggies were defeated, 4-1, by the FSU Seminoles on Sept. 8. Sunday’s matchup between the Bruins and Aggies will be the first meeting be tween the two programs. Aggie invite previews NCAA Championships By Jeremy Brown The Battalion The Texas A&M swimming teams will compete against some of the nation’s best this weekend while hosting the Texas A&M Invitational at the Student Recre ation Center Natatorium. The meet began Thursday and will wrap up Saturday. The men will compete against No/3 Stanford, No. 17 Penn State, Purdue, Kentucky and individual swimmers from No. 1 Texas and No. 2 Auburn. The women will compete against No. 15 SMU, Kentucky and individuals from No. 6 Auburn. Coming into the meet, A&M has dom inated its competition. The men’s team, ranked No. 8 in the nation, is 3-0 in dual meet competition with wins over TCU, Kansas and Nebraska. The men also fin ished second in the Big 12 Relays. The women’s team is 4-0 and finished third in the Big 12 Relays despite injuries to Kelly Bolton, Katie Swan and Casey Mucha. The team’s wins were over TCU, Kansas, Arkansas and North Texas. “We were missing three really good swimmers but the other girls have done a great job stepping up,” said women’s coach Steve Bultman. Bultman and men’s coach Mel Nash said the A&M Invitational will provide solid competition for their teams. Nash named Stanford in particular as a test for his team. “They bring in people you can really measure yourself against,” Nash said. “It really makes for some good racing at this point in the year.” During the final two days of competi tion, the preliminaries for the individual swimming events will begin at 11 a.m. and the diving prelims will begin at 1 p.m. The finals for the individual events and the re lays will begin at 7 p.m . — Sports in Brief—: Aggie linebacker ; completes suigery Texas A&M linebacker Jason * Glenn underwent surgery to re- ■ pair a ruptured lateral collateral ' ligament and lateral tendon in his left knee on Thursday. The injury, sustained in the fourth quarter against Oklahoma .. Saturday, ended Glenn’s Aggie £ career. Team medical staff expect Glenn to make a full recovery be- ' fore the NFL Combine in February.
