This album is an eclectic mix of synthesizers, twangy guitars, saxo phones and all-star cameos by classic rappers, including Biz Markie and Bahamadia. The album opens with a mellow track in the style of such oth er trip-hop greats as Sneaker Pimps, complete with deep bass and country guitar. However, Morcheeba’s new project is not limited to the down- tempo, soulful style of many trip-hop acts. This album ranges from jazz to loungy ballads to disco tracks, sounding more like Faith, Wind and Fire than conventional trip-hop acts like'Portishead. opens with disco-style violins and moves into a song any Blondie fan would be proud of — a medium- speed disco track with a bouncy rhythm and vocals sounding much like '‘Rapture.” This album varies so much in style the listener can hardly keep up. This is a great asset becauseeacli song in this album is better that Ik last. These songs should appeal!# lovers of any genre from trip-hopi disco to hip-hop. (Grade: B+) —Jason A = instant classic D = don't buy it B = a cut above F = burn in effigy C = average Godzilla This album’s highlights include “World Looking In,” a trippy track with country guitar and “In the Hands of Gods,” a song that sounds much like uptempo West Coast hip- hop with bleepy synthesizer riffs, vo cals by Biz Markie and heavy scratching by DJ Crossphader. Per haps the most interesting track on the album is “Shallow End.” This track Continued from Page 4 There are times when these obvi ously fake effects lift the veil of se riousness and realistic intensity (which are staples of modern sci-fi movies) and allow one to sit back and have fun with a movie. This film has plot holes big enough for Mack trucks to drive through, and scientific fallacies that would leave even the scientifically uninitiated rolling in their seats. But, the great thing is it does not matter. Godzilla 2()()() is a return to the classic sci-fi flicks that inspired an entire generation of scientists not by proving science correct or incor rect, but by asking, “What if?” This is the point at which the movie’s plot should be described, but is that really necessary? This movie is meant to be another in stallment in the god-knows-how- many Godzilla movies in which the great, green beasty awakes, trashes Tokyo, then saves the world from some other abomination that some how is worse than he is. The adversarial monster, in this case, looks suspiciously like the big-budget, komodo-dragonish Godzilla which Bopped at the box office a few years ago and, ironical ly enough, keeps trying to clone everyone's favorite big buddy. One cannot help but think thai this film is a meager attempt by Toho pictures to silently mock the giant, inefficient American version of the fire-spittin’ gargantuan. But, ignoring this quiet stabai the U.S. big-budget production.the movie still delivers a good bad- quality sci-fi flick. (Grade: B+) — Stuart Huts Comedy Continued from Paget entertain and unite the audience. Cedric the Entertainer comes across as likable but altogether for gettable. Mac begins his routine in the same vein as Hughley but quickly falls into describing childhood and “alternative parenting methods” that border on frightening. Mac’s descriptions of the correct way to discipline children (violence) are at first slightly humorous, but he drones on in this direction for near ly 15 minutes so the routine no longer seems like comedy and more I like the rantings of a child abuser.
