Once again, there was widespread vandalism, hundreds of arrests and many broken windows. Some people blame alcohol usage, others blame lack of police involvement, and cries go out that humanity is falling apart. People should know that rioting in sports is not new. For example, in the city of Pompeii, which is the "city of ash" now, gladiator events, similar to those seen in the recent box office smash Gladiator. On several occasions, the smell of blood or another extraordinary event would lead fans into joining the sword fest, and everyone would die. In retrospect, the events in Brussels and Los Angeles are mere gamesof tag by comparison. While rioting and looting are not acceptable, theyre- fleet the characteristics of society. Though people in mod ern society like tb think they are socially advanced, the aforementioned events show little has changed. The dif ference now is that people know the steps to end such senseless acts. And as G1 Joe taught all of us, knowing is half the battle. Shaun Fitzpatricl junior English m Wednesday, June . What he lacks in experience, he will gain." Not only is the opportunity to compete overseas good for King, but it also helps out the conference and al lows the school to showcase its talent. The All-Big 12 team, coached by Colorado coach Ricardo Pat ton, will begin practice on Aug. 5, 2000, in Dallas. The team will travel to Europe Aug. 7.
