fans clashed with Belgian soccer fans after Turkey's 2-0
victory over Belgium in Euro 2000. Once again, there was
widespread vandalism, hundreds of arrests and many
broken windows.
Some people blame alcohol usage, others blame lack of
police involvement, and cries go out that humanity is
falling apart. People should know that rioting in sports is
not new. For example, in the city of Pompeii, which is the
"city of ash" now, gladiator events, similar to those seen
in the recent box office smash Gladiator.
On several occasions, the smell of blood or another
extraordinary event would lead fans into joining the
sword fest, and everyone would die. In retrospect, the
events in Brussels and Los Angeles are mere gamesof
tag by comparison.
While rioting and looting are not acceptable, theyre-
fleet the characteristics of society. Though people in mod
ern society like tb think they are socially advanced, the
aforementioned events show little has changed. The dif
ference now is that people know the steps to end such
senseless acts. And as G1 Joe taught all of us, knowing is
half the battle.

When comparing King's ability to

Watkins said he is "on par with any

Not only is the opportunity to

it also helps out the conference and al

He said he is disappointed about
signing only one true receiver.
Another athlete who may step in
and play receiver is Eric Crutchfield
out of Galena Park, Texas.
Slocum said he was disappointed
with A&M's overall kicking game
from last year, and wanted to bring
in a few recrtiits to compete in the
fall. Punter Cody Scates of Tyler Lee
will attempt to fill Shane Lechler's
All-American shoes, and Chris Sims
of Garland High is the first kicker to
receive a football scholarship since
Kyle Bryant in 1994.
"The kicking game is such an im
portant aspect of football," Slocum
said. "I didn't want to take a chance."
Slocum said the defensive line
needed to get bigger and more phys
ical. Defensive tackle Eddie Brown
stands 6'2", weighing 295 pounds,
and led Eisenhower to last year's 5A
State Championship game. Linnis
Smith, out of John Tyler is 6'4", 260
pounds and has the ability to play
both inside and out on the line. Mar
cus Jasmin, of De La Salle High
School in New Orleans, is one of only
two recruits from outside the Lone
Star State. He is the biggest of the
three defensive linemen at 6'4" and
295 pounds.
The other recruit from outside
Texas is Joey Perot. He is a 6'4" tight
end out of Petal, Mississippi.
Slocum said he is thrilled to have
signed Perot.
