MEDALS reaches out to students Conference encourages high schoolers to examine opportunities BY RICHARD BRAY The Battalion A life of low-paying, menial labor may seem a bleak reality for millions of disadvantaged high school students, but Minority Enrichment mid Development through Academic and Leadership Skills (MEDALS) is trying to show some of these students that there is a ray of hope in higher education. MEDALS is holding a conference Friday mid Saturday in the Memorial Student Center with the aim of encouraging high school students to explore their career opportunities after graduation. “MEDALS is all about getting [high school students] to do something positive after high school — whether it is college, or mil itary, or anything like that,” katiuska Quintero, die executive direc tor of the conference mid a senior bilingual education major, said. Quintero said the conference will include a college fair with representatives from universities, technical schools and military organizations. SEAL joins TAMUG 1 Maritime Academy Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity will hold its 15th annual Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant Saturday at 7 p.m. in Rudder Theater. The pageant will feature eight contestants competing in model ing, question and answer, talent and introduction portions. Van Johnson, Alpha Phi Alpha chapter president and senior chemistry major, said the schol arship pageant is a national event held as a celebration of woman hood and scholastic achievement. The pageant winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the op portunity to compete at the state pageant in Lubbock. The first and second runners- up will receive $500 and $300, re spectively. In the past, the chapter has had four national contestants and two national queens. Japanese ambassador to visit Bush Library The Hon. Shunji Yanai, Japan ese ambassador to the United States, will visit Texas A&M this Saturday, Jan. 29.
