Page 6 Wednesday, JanJi AGGIELIFE THE BATTALION ‘Millionaire’ nicicl ABC high ratin* ^ Various Artists Magnolia soundtrack CD courtesy of Reprise Records When writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson made Magnolia, he also wanted to use the film as a vehicle to launch the career of one of his fa vorite singers, Aimee Mann. Anderson even went so far as to have one of Mann’s songs sung by the main characters in a brief and unusual segment of the film. Mann is an excellent singer and songwriter, and this album shows off' her talent as her work comprises nine of the 13 tracks — only two other bands are featured in the four remain ing tracks. The one problem with the album is that it fails to include much of the score to Magnolia, which surpasses the music used in the film. Perhaps the producers of the al bum should have been more con cerned with including more than one two-minute track of the amazing score by Jon Brion, instead of trying to launch the career of Aimee Mann by showcasing mainly her work on this album. V {Tit lOUCi CUBE Tex-Mex Aw _ _ Various Artists The Rough Guide to Tex-Mex World Music Network -Kyle Whitacre This collection of Mexican ballads and polkas is a great guide for someone looking for a CD that w ill provide an in troduction to Tex-Mex ranchero music. assuming of course that the listener en joys a healthy dose of the accordion. Like previous efforts by groups such as Los Super Seven, the World Music Network’s Rough Guide to Tex-Mex gets weighty help from accordion superstar Flaco Jimenez, w ho’s represented here by three songs on the 19 song collection. Jimenez’s tracks are among the best on the CD, which also features contribu tions by Place’s brother Santiago Jimenez Jr. The two songs by Santiago represent the more traditional Tex-Mex style, including the instrumental “Alma De Tejas," a lively polka number that begs to be danced to. Also on the collection are Los Pinkys, a local band from Austin, w ith two songs from their Esta Pasion album. Los Pinkys distinguish themselves with a good mix of English and Spanish singing, though it’s unfortunate that the collection does not include “Real Cool Dude,” their standout song on Esta Pa sion. Surely the compilers of Rough Guide could have included it m place o "I ley Baby, Que Paso,” the dreadful song by The Texas Tornadoes (here pei formed by Jimmy Sturr) that anyone who has attended a Mexican wedding has no doubt had to suffer through. The standout on the album has to be Mingo Saldivar’s rendition of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” (or, in S “Rueda IX* Fuego”). Creative! NEW YORK (AP) —ABC feeling like a million boo then some.
