Wfc Speaker: herbal cures not for all BY CARRIE BENNETT The Battalion >ne” whoi tificial ini? aved thefi its own rea se of 7W get Hollyvi [hey simpi lactic battle sparateconi Strange Dc, I In a wrap-up yesterday of the Healthy Living Lecture Series, nutri tional experts said the United States spends more than $4 billion annual ly on 20,000 herbal products claim ing to alleviate symptoms from colds, depression, insomnia and ^itress. I Dr. Jane Cohen, health educator for A.R Beutel Health Center, Jen nifer Gonzales, nutrition graduate assistant, and Vanessa Roberts, a nu trition assistant and junior nutrition major, lectured on the dosage, risks and recommendations for herbal remedies and medications. I Gonzales said herbal medications | make up 28 percent of a $22-billion supplement industry, which in cludes vitamins. She said some peo ple take supplements to achieve a sense of self control when conven tional medicines do not produce the results they expect, i “Cost also is a factor, and people don’t want to spend the money to go to the doctor,” she said. Gonzales said herbal remedies are perceived as safe because they are labeled natural. She said a sup plement labeled natural is not nec essarily safe. “Arsenic and cyanide are both natural, and they are also killers,” Gonzales said. “Some people believe that anything in pill form has been approved by the Federal Drug Ad ministration (FDA), and the actuali ty of the situation is that there is no regulation for herbals. ” Gonzales said there is no stan dard for testing the safety of herbs or their efficiency. Limited testing has been done on the herbs, but reading labels is a way to find out if the medication has been tested. Roberts said people are often un aware of the side effects associated with herbal supplements. She said side effects can include heartburn, breath odor and hormonal side ef fects. Roberts said herbs have uses oth er than alternative medicines. -m Graduating Seniors Texas A&M Graduation Announcements • Aggieland Printing can get you ready to mail announcements in less than one week • We have our own unique design Licensed by A&M Don't miss it - see them on the web www.aggielandprinting.com We sell • Graduation Announcements • Thank You Notes Graduation Remembrance Displays Personalized Graduate Notepads Call or come see us: www.aggielandprinting.com Aggieland Printing • 1801 Holleman • College Station KERMfi 693-8621 M-F 8:30-5:30 The week of April 4 - April 8 l rs 5 Acct 229 Part I Mon Apr 5 5pm-7pm Part II Tue Apr 6 5pm-7pm Part HI Wed Apr 7 5pm-7pm Part IV Thu Apr 8 5pm-7pm Bann 303 Dr. Stein Parti Sun Apr 4 4pm-7pm OR Mon Apr 5 4pm-7pm Part II Sun Apr 5 lOpm-lam Part III Mon Apr 5 7pm-10pm Econ 202 Dr. Mabry Part I Mon Apr 5 9pm-llpm Part II Tuc Apr 6 9pm-11pm Part III Wed Apr 7 9pm-llpm Part IV Thu Apr 8 9pm-llpm Econ 203 Ullmer & Moroney Part I Mon Apr 5 7pm-9pm Part II Tue Apr 6 7pm-9pm Part III Wed Apr 7 7pm-9pm Part IV Thu Apr 8 7pm-9pnt Fine 341 Parti Mon Apr 5 Spm-lOpm Part II Tue Apr 6 Spm-lOpm Part III Wed Apr 7 Spm-lOpm Part IV Thu Apr 8 8pm~I0pm Math 141 Parti Sun Apr 4 7pm-10pm Part II Mon Apr 5 lOpm-lam Part III Tue Apr 6 7pm-10pm Mgmt 211 Part I Mon Apr 5 5pm-7pm 7pm-9pm OR 9pm-llpm Part 11 Tue Apr 6 5pm-7pm 7pm-9pm OR 9pm-llpm Part III Wed Apr 7 4pm-7pm 7pm-10pm OR lOpm-lam Tickets go on sale Sunday at 3:00 PM. 4.0 & Go is located on the comer of SW Pkwy and Tx Avo, behind KFC next to Lack'! She said there is the possibility of interaction with oth er medicines and allergic reactions. “People should not mix herbs with aspirin, decongestants, caf feine, alcohol or antihistamines,” Cohen said. “Herbs should be taken carefully by people suffering from medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and women that are pregnant should use caution when taking certain herbs.” Gonzales gave recommendations for people who decide to use herbs as medication. “We recommend investigating the herb and the brand of medicine before taking an herbal medication,” Gonzales said. “Look at behaviors that might cause the problem you suffer from before deciding to take an herbal medication.” John Mellencamp Foley’s & other Ticket Centers (409) 268-0414 www.ticketmaster.com •ALL TICKETS SUBJECT TO SERVICE CHARGE.
