Lecture series increases healthy eating awareness BY APRIL YOUNG The Battalion Linda Kapusniak, author of Guide to Low-Fat Dining in the Brazos Val ley, will offer low-fat-food tips today during the Healthy Living Lecture Se ries presentation at 5:30 p.m. in 280 Student Recreation Center. Kapusniak said her presentation will focus on healthy food choices at restaurants, government regulations and home meal replacement. The government regulations mon itor the terminology restaurants use to refer to low-fat menu items, and meal-replacement systems allow cus tomers to view and select items to purchase and have freshly prepared by professional chefs. DeAun Woosley, fitness director at the Rec Center, said the Healthy Liv ing Lecture Series is an opportunity for students to learn ways to lead healthier lifestyles. “This program gives students an opportunity to discover which restau rant and fast food chains in town are low fat, contain hidden fat and which ones contain items that are healthy,” Woosley said. “Every restaurant has low-fat items, but some don’t adver tise it as much as others.” Kapusniak said the frequency of Americans dining in restaurants and the general lack of knowledge about low-fat eating influenced her to write the book. “Americans do a lot of eating out, and some have a hard time going out to eat and believing that they can eat low fat, mostly because of a lack of general knowledge and information,” Kapusniak said. Woosley said this program will give students a chance to hear a well- known author from the Brazos Val ley. “Linda Kapusniak is a well known author and dietitian in the Brazos Val ley,” Woosley said. “We don’t often have authors that will come to the lec ture series and speak for free, so this is a good opportunity. ” Kapusniak’s guide, which con tains low-fat eating tips for 125 restaurants in the Brazos Valley, will be for sale at the end of March. Film depicts traditional Baptist views, sparks debate BY APRIL YOUNG The Battalion Tension within the Southern Bap tist faith and women’s struggles against the oppression by male reli gious leaders were the foci of a pre sentation sponsored by Gender Issues Education Services. The film, “Battle for the Minds,” which was part of Gender Issues Ed ucation Service’s celebration of Women’s History Month, was cen tered around the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville. The film showed the extent to which many male ministers and members of the Southern Baptist Convention went to justify their views about the position women should hold in the church. Linda Cortina, a freshman biology major, said the film showed the many ways the Bible can be read. “This film proved that the Bible is open to interpretation and you can use it to support any issue,” Cortina said. “You can use it to support slavery or you can use it to support women’s po sition in the church,” she said. The Southern Baptist Convention allowed women to enter the ministry but not as pastors. In a 1984 resolu tion, it was declared that women could not hold positions of leadership in the Southern Baptist Convention. Many members of the convention said they believed that women who wanted to rise to the position of pas tor had misunderstood God’s calling in their life and that it was a delusion for women to think they would serve as a minister in the church. Natalie Wilson, a volunteer in Gender Issues Education Services and freshman zoology major, said the presentation taught her about the structure of the Southern Baptist Con vention. “I am not Baptist, but I learned a lot about the structure of the Baptist Convention,” Wilson said. “It’s ex tremely political, and I was not aware of that,” she said. “The terror of women becoming equal was very obvious in the men’s speech,” said Elizabeth Dungan, a volunteer in Gender Issues Education Services and an English major. THcia Draughn, coordinator of the film series and a graduate assistant for Gender Issues Education Services, said the film displayed strides women have taken to overcome obstacles they have faced. “The film shows there have been gains for women having leadership roles in religious fields and that you have to remember it takes little steps to reach equality,” she said.
