McDermott loses all of his money in a high-stakes game at the beginning of the film and calls it quits to take the straight and narrow road of getting a real job to please his girlfriend Jo (Gretchen Mol). ' McDermott’s friend Worm comes into the picture, and McDermott be comes torn between sticking to this straight and narrow life, or going back to rounding to help his long time friend. The film spends two hours examin ing the world of professional poker players through the eyes of McDermott and depicts what it takes to make it big in this world. The acting in the film is excellent and is the film’s driving force, but the plot is confusing during the poker scenes. [ Although the plot has its slow mo ments, the story has a way of wrap ping around an audience and drawing them in without having to try. I Overall, Rounders is an intriguing and intense movie worth the ticket price. (B +) — Beth Focht Photo Courtesy of Miramax Films Matt Damon and Famke Jansen star in the new Miramax release Rounders. The Spanish Prisoners Starring: Campbell Scott and Steve Martin Directed by: David Mamet Rated PC Playing at Hollywood 1 6 The Spanish Prisoner is hands-down one of the best films of the year. It is a tense, taught thriller. The film stars Scott (son of George C. Scott) as a naive businessman who invents something known as “The Process” that will revolutionize business and corner the market for its investors. Unfortunately for Scott’s character, his company is unwilling to put his share of “The Process” in writing. Scott’s character then enlists the aid of a shady businessman played by Martin. Martin’s character turns out to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing and swindles Scott 5 from the beginning. The Spanish Prisoner is superbly written and directed by veteran Mamet (Wdg the Dog). Mamet combines his usual rapid-fire dialogue with paranoia and suspense. Martin delivers the performance of a ca reer in this Hitchcockian thriller. One of the biggest political stories in history is unfold ing in Washing ton, and Art Buchwald has moved to the Big Apple. The Pulitzer Prize-winning po litical satirist and Washington institution has washed his hands of the na tion’s capital. He had to, he says, if he want ed to move on, personally and professionally. “After a certain amount of time, there’s nothing new. Restaurants are the same, stores are the same, your bud dies are the same,” Buchwald, 72, said in Tuesday’s New York Times. “I do think one of the pur poses of my move was to keep going.” Buchwald, who moved into the Regency Hotel last week, noted that his good friend Ed ward Bennett Williams, the lawyer, had died. But she’s won the respect of some Hindu priests for her pronunciation. Sanskrit language scholars had complained about Madonna’s mispronunciations of religious in cantations on her new “Ray of Light” album. But United News of India re ported Tuesday that Brahmin priests in India’s holiest city were impressed when she recit ed a mantra during the recent MTV awards. The news agency said scholars in Varanasi murmured, “Doing well,” and “Genuine seeker” as they listened to the pop star on television. The World Vaishnava Associa tion issued a statement this week condemning Madonna for wearing a holy facial marking while “wear ing clothes through which her nip ples were clearly visible and while gyrating in a sexually suggestive manner.” IgS FAIR i even rs: COME ppo TH JOBS OF YOUR FUTURE, AT THE FALL BUSINESS CAREER FAIR’Om nr-n-rr-Rar*i-n o>i 4 nno ' ' loya SEPTEMBER 21-24, 1998 WEHNER BUILDING, WEST CAMPUS Presented by Business Student Council SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Monday, September 21st Reception at the Hilton Hotel, 7.00 pm.
