A sequel ne’er do well. You could possibly be the worst sequel of all time, if it wasn’t for Hal loween 3. The movie company ap parently figured that a bland cartoon of the original would produce even more success for the future. This ex act model would be followed years later with Gremlins 2. Whenever I think of all the people who like Grease 2 better than Grease, it makes me think of all those people who like the Wallflowers more than Bob Dylan. What gives? — Chris Martin T he original Grease is definitely the better of the two movies. For starters, the cast in Grease can actually sing, while the T-Birds and Pink Ladies of Grease 2 can bare ly carry a tune. Michelle Pfieffer does give it a good try when she belts out “Cool Rider.” Also, the leading man just is n’t bad enough in Grease 2. Even though he is English and pops wheelies on his motorcycle, he does n’t quite have the pelvic thrust thing down as well as John Travolta. Finally, while the main plot in the original Grease revolves around the big dance and features some nifty footwork, Grease 2 is all about the big talent show. It’s too bad none of these people have any talent. — Leah Templeton D id you ever notice when you make a copy, it doesn’t turn out as well as the original? Apply the same principle to the dy namic duo of hot-rod teen love movies, Grease and Grease 2. The differences between the two are differences of degree, not of kind. While both movies featured fast cars, car-hop tunes and morality-chal lenged characters, Grease comes across as the real thing while Grease 2 comes off as just another thing to see when you are bored. Simply compare the soundtracks of the two movies for a concrete example. Every song you think of when someone tells you to think of the Grease films probably came from the original. Those of you who can hum any song from Grease 2, you should pay more attention next time to the col lected studs and studettes and not dwell on insignificant packaging like quality and originality. — Stephen Wells G rease was such a hit because it was the ultimate chick flick. It had dancing, romance and in nuendo; the kind of stuff that drives the girls wild. The main characters Sandy, a good girl, and Danny, a bad boy, find romance together. Women relate to Sandy because she is a virginal angel with a socially acceptable wild streak. This is a stereotype many young women try to achieve. Sandy is able to reign in the rebellion of Danny and turn him into a good man. This is yet another feminine fantasy. In reality, instead of a happy marriage, Sandy was probably al ternating visits to her therapist, to resolve the issues that led her to make such choices, and court, to collect back alimony and child sup port from Danny. Grease 2 was just a crass market ing ploy aimed at capitalizing of the popularity on the original. — Travis Irby H ow can the two best movies ever made be compared? Grease and Grease 2 are entirely different films. Grease is a love story, a typical boy-meets-girl at the beach, then they end up at the same high school. Totally realistic. Grease 2 is cheesy and fun. Who can resist a laugh at leather pants-wearin’ Michelle Pfeif fer’s version of “Cool Rider?” Grease is a classic; Grease 2 is a joke. But both are good movies. Both are fun ny and high-energy, feel-good musicals. The differences are obvious: Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta can sing and act. Michelle Pfeiffer’s voice leaves something to be desired, and Michael (Maxwell Caulfield) has noth ing but soap operas and a disgusting performance in Empire Records under his acting belt. The movie to see with a friend or a date is Grease; the movie to laugh with at a party is Grease 2. Do it for your country. — April Towery Please see Grease on Page 5. ig detail te. Of course this was all thanks to his niece Penny (where were her parents?) and the dog-wonder, Brain. Together these two were the actual foils of Dr. Claw’s plots. Inspector Gadget just got all of the credit because he had those cool go-go gadget arms and legs. RAINBOW BRITE Thanks to this colorful little hero ine, the world remains bright and shiny still today. Rainbow Brite, along with her rainbow horse, the Color Kids and their little pals the Sprites, managed time and time again to keep the evil Murky and Lurky from turning the world gray and bleak. However, when things got really tough and darkness was near, Rain bow looked to her trusty rainbow belt, and all was right with the world. — Leah Templeton MY LITTLE PONY “My Little Pony” was a truly bizarre look at some magical hors es. The program was really a front to push the belief system of these pa gan pony gods, whose powers were based on emotional manipulation. There are questions raised about the parentage of a cat person. -—Travis Irby HEAVY METAL I’ll be the first to admit this is not exactly children’s programming, but few cartoon events possess the ability to scar young minds forever in the same graphically blatant fashion as this testosterone-fueled violence and pornography festival. In the same vein, “Aeon Flux” de serves an honorable mention, but did not feature a monster Sammy Hagar guitar solo in the soundtrack. TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES This cartoon is the reason why I insisted on being named Raphael in seventh grade Spanish. Everyone knows he was the cool one. Besides spawning several notably terrible movies, these extraordinarily gifted reptiles and their rat buddy frieled a marketing campaign rivaling sev eral major religions in its scope.
