Men’s basketball team eludes setting conference losi streak record, wins final basketball game in G. RollieWti By Jeff Schmidt Staff writer Some things never change. G. Rollie White Coliseum may have faded into Texas A&M basketball history Satur day, but A&M’s home dominance over Baylor continued. This time the Aggies defeated the Bears 80-75 for the Ag gies’first Big 12 Conference victory of the season. A&M has only lost to Baylor twice at G. Rollie in the Tony Barone era. A&M will turn right around and play Baylor again on Thurs day in the first round of the Big 12 Conference tournament. Ironically, on senior day, it was freshman Michael Schmidt who proved that Schmidt really does happen. Schmidt scored 26 points and hit five three-pointers, including one with 1:34 left in the game that broke Baylor’s back and gave the Aggies a seven-point ad vantage. The Bears would get no closer than the final margin of five as the Aggies hit five free throws down the stretch to clinch the victory. Sophomore guard Steve Houston, who also made some big plays down the stretch, scored 16 points and handed out eight assists. Before fouling out, junior for ward Shanne Jones continued his brilliant play, scoring 20 points, despite battling bigger players like Gabe Ramirez and Brian Skinner. Freshman forward Aaron Jack, battling the flu, and senior center Larry Thompson played excellent defense on Skinner all game long, limiting Skinner to only 10 points, eight below his average. Still, the Aggies could not stop Baylor guard Roddrick Miller. Miller hit five three- pointers in the first half and scored 20 points. However, A&M managed to hold Miller to only nine points in the second half. Miller finished the game with eight three- point baskets, the most in G. Rollie history and the most against an A&M team. The former record was held by several others, including Latrell Sprewell, who hit seven in 1992 while playing at the University of Alabama. “The win isn’t a big deal,” Coach Tony Barone said. “The attitude and effort (of the players) — that’s bigger than the stupid win.” Schmidt may disagree with that statement. “I’m feeling so good right now,” Schmidt said. "We wanted to get a win for Larry Thompson and Coach. This is what should have happened all year long.” Thompson said he felt the team rallied behind Barone, who was coaching his last game for the Aggies. “We just went out to try to do everything we could IJ. .4 JAKE SCHRICKUNG, Junior Shanne Jones goes up for a breakaway the second half of the Aggies' 80-75 victory ovef for Coach Barone," Thompson said. “Every out there and had fun.” It was Thompson and Jack’s defense that Skinner and put the Aggies in position to win “That was my main focus. I just wanted I up,” Thompson said. Baylor Coach Harry Miller said the AggiesJ find a way to bottle Skinner up. "He’s never played well here,” Miller said.' us to death. We just didn’t prove to be as physic “It’s an emotional, draining loss I he\ didwjj had to do down to the end. A lot of credit should goj (Barone) for how his kids played. That’s a credit tola his players,” Millersaid. “Theyshould beta abend of mind going into the conference tournament" Coaches Continued from Page 5 But do not mourn for G. Rollie. It is not going anywhere. G. Rollie will now be the exclusive home to A&M Volleyball. The volleyball team will change locker rooms and take over what used to be the men’s basket ball locker room. There has also been talk of another renovation, but no definite plans have been set. The $36 million Reed Arena will officially open April 21 for Muster. The 12,500 seat arena will also host graduation ceremonies on May 15th and 16th. Reed Arena was sup posed to open for the 1997-98 bas ketball season but the roof col- the opening for one year. ( j.
