Rollie White Coliseum. However, these orange and white hoopsters attend Sam Houston State University just down the road in Huntsville. Sam Houston can be a danger ous team because of their excel lent guard play. The Aggies’ perimeter defense will stand a formidable test against these Southland Conference foes. The Bearkats once again have the services of their veteran guard Mike Dillard, who was redshirted last year due to a sep arated shoulder. Dillard, a 6-foot 6-inch senior, averaged 18.5 points last year in the four games leading up to his injury. This season, Dillard was select ed as a preseason second team All-SLC team member. New life for the Bearkats this season was found in two Arizona products that have found their way into the starting lineup this year. David Amaya, a 6-foot 7- inch sophomore from Yuma, Arizona, provided lift for the team in Dillard’s absence last season. Amaya lead the team in scoring with 10.7 points per game and rebounding with a 5.5 a game clip. He has moved from guard to forward in the SHSU projected starting lineup. Boney Watson worked his way into the starting lineup last season as a true freshman and finished ranked seventh in the conference in assists. The Aggies will have to take advantage of their size on the inside and make sure they step out on the perimeter, because the Bearkat back court will take advantage of any opportunities presented. Texas A&M dropped their record to 4-1 with the loss to Alabama, but the Aggies are look ing to avoid losing two in a row for the first time this year. SprewelTs agent says race was factor in suspension NEW YORK (AP) — The agent for suspended All-Star guard Latrell Sprewell said Sunday he thought race may have been a factor in the confrontation between the player and coach P.J. Carlesimo. Appearing on ABC’s “This Week,’’ agent Arn Tellem said: “I think when you look at it, I don’t think the issue of race can be ignored. I think that's the best way to answer. I think it must be looked into. “You have a white coach who has a history of having problems with players in the NBA. Obviously, the players that he’s had problems with are black players,” Tellem said. However, Billy Hunter, execu tive director of the NBA Players Association, said, “I don’t think that that’s the issue at all.” “I think what you’ve got is a league that’s predominantly black and an administration that’s pre dominantly white,” he said on NBC’s “Meet The Press.” “If there are individuals who wish to read the race card or race issue into it, they can do that, but I haven’t found any evidence of that. What I’ve found is that, in this instance, there’s been a rush to judgment. I think the league has overreacted,” said Hunter, who is black. Sprewell received the longest non-drug suspension in NBA histo ry — one year — on Thursday, and the Golden State Warriors termi nated the final three years of his four-year, $32 million contract after Sprewell attacked Carlesimo at practice last Monday. Witnesses said he grabbed Carlesimo in a chokehold and threatened to kill him. About 15 minutes later, Sprewell returned to practice and confronted the coach again before being pulled away. The players’ union has filed grievances against the NBA and the Warriors, arguing that the penalty was excessive. The case will be heard by Fordham Law School Dean John Feerick no earlier than Jan. 4. Sprewell and Tellem have con sulted with attorney Johnnie Cochran, who successfully defend ed OJ. Simpson on murder charges. Sprewell is expected to make a statement Tuesday or Wednesday. Carlesimo did not return phone calls Sunday. Commissioner David Stern and the Warriors were applauded by many, including several black NBA players, for meeting force with force and sending a message that the league would not tolerate what it called “premeditated assault.” Class of *00 Pullout Shirts & Window Stickers On Sale Today In The Commons Lobby and dui,tom 404 ^LLnLuE.riittj <EaLt doCCzcjs. <zStat Con, <ZT X .
