Eight-year-old Renee Crous want ed the slippers off Mikhail Baryshnikov’s feet for an auction to help her ballet troupe stage a ben efit for a hospital. So she wrote him a letter. On Wednesday, she got a spe cial delivery from New York City. “He actually answered me,” gasped Renee, fingering a pair of rather tattered, flesh-colored ballet slippers autographed by the dancer. Inside the shoes was the nick name “Misha” printed in faded let ters. Baryshnikov also sent a signed photo and Renee’s letter, on which the dancer’s 4-year-old daughter had scribbled a picture. The used slippers are rare. The 49-year-old Baryshnikov has danced barefoot since 1990. Bidding will start at $1,000. Annulment against ex-wife's beliefs BOSTON (AP) — The former wife of Sen. John F. La Boheme Continued from Page 3 Cranor said the National Company is the best touring opera in the nation and the audience can expect to see a spectacular performance. “Everything the New York City Opera does is worthy of its own opera house,” he said. “La Boheme is the most appro priate and probably the opera that 20-somethings can relate to the most. Such a combina tion will make for a spectacu lar production.” La Boheme, the first opera of OPAS' current season, is playing Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in Rudder Auditorium. ^ _..d graduation tickets for 5/9, 7:30p.m. Will payl Call 8-3409. They question Cobain’s addiction to heroin, as well as his suicide. “They think it is a pretty pathetic idolization of some one, but I don’t care,” Schneider said. “He was an extremely talented musician who played a big part in the history of rock 'n’ roll.” Tejano singer Selena, like Cobain, also died at a young age. Salina Gonzales, a sopho more business major, greatly admired Selena not only for her music, but also for the qualities she possessed as a woman. “I love listening to Tejano music, and hers was different from the other kinds of music out there,” Gonzales said. “But I really admired her because she was a great role model for Hispanics.” Gonzales said her esteem for Selena goes beyond simply buying her music. “I own all the CDs, but I also have the two books written about her. A little area in my room has posters of her and there is a little clock with her picture inside it,” Gonzales said. “I have pret ty much everything of hers— well, maybe not everything, but I own a lot of her stuff.” Gonzales said public grief following Selena’s death “I own all the CDs, but I also have the two books written about her. A little area in my room has posters of her and there is a little clock with her pic ture inside it.” Salina Gonzales on late Tejano star Selena proved not only the popularity of Tejano music, but also the power of the Hispanic community. “I remember trying to get the magazines like People and Texas Monthly with her on the cover,” Gonzales said. “They were all sold out. They were extremely hard to get.” This past summer, the world’s eyes witnessed the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta, Ga. Among the competitors was Dan O’Brien, the American decathlete, who was favored to capture the gold. However, many people remembered O’Brien’s notable absence from the 1994 Summer Games in Barcelona. During the Olympic trials, O’Brien failed to qualify for the Olympic team, even though he was the reigning world champion in the decathlon. Shoe manufacturer Reebok had built up a multi-million dollar ad campaign surrounding the impending face off between O'Brien and Dave Johnson. The famous “Dan and Dave: To be Settled in Barcelona” slogan quickly ended. Kendall Madden, a junior agri culture development major, said O’Brien’s competitive spirit in Atlanta inspired him. “I admire the dedication and patience he had to have in his heart to wait four years,” Madden said. Madden first learned of O’Brien in the fall of 1994, during his freshman year on the Texas A&M track team. He said some teammates compared their scores to those of professional athletes such as O’Brien, and he realized how far he had to go. Madden said everyone can learn something from O’Brien. “The way he competes, you can tell he is not self-absorbed as some people are when they get to that level,” Madden said. “People can see how he has learned to achieve the goals in his life and learn from that.” MSC FILM SOCIETY Now Showing: wnea inn MRsr wtK«xt Friday, April 11 j7:00 and 9:30pm \Top Gun (Free Movie: F.O.V. presents iDruken Master II |Wed., April 6 at 6:00pm I Acad. Kerry, D-Mass., divorced Julia Thorne in 1984 after a 14-year mar riage. He wed Teresa Heinz, heiress to the Heinz food fortune, in 1995. Kerry and Heinz are Catholic; Thorne is Episcopalian. The Roman Catholic Church does not recognize divorce and holds that annulment, a finding that true marriage never existed, is the only way to end a marriage. Thorne doesn’t recognize the validity of an annulment, but she won’t oppose his request, she said.
