News Tuesday Page November 26, Astronauts attempt satellite retrieva CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — In a risky maneuver requiring pre cision flying, space shuttle Colum bia’s astronauts went after one satellite Monday while trying to avoid being rear-ended by another. The crew slowly closed in on the speeding, saucer-shaped satellite in preparation for Mon day night’s retrieval. The ren dezvous was moved up three hours because an ultraviolet tele scope in orbit was gaining on the satellite faster than expected. The two satellites were dropped off by Columbia’s astronauts last week. The two-ton saucer was used to grow semiconductor film in the ultra-clean vacuum of space; the 3.5-ton telescope is looking at stars and galaxies. As of Monday afternoon, the satellites were trailing Columbia 220 miles above Earth. It was a 41-mile-long procession: Colum bia, followed 23 miles behind by the saucer, followed 18 miles be hind by the telescope. The satel lites were expected to be 15 miles apart at the time of retrieval. The plan called for Columbia to leapfrog backward over the saucer to a point 9 miles behind the craft and 6 miles ahead of the telescope. Then commander Ken neth Cockrell was to guide the shuttle in for the capture. Concerned about a possible collision — which could be cat astrophic — Mission Control considered sending the astro nauts after the saucer a full day early to give them a wider mar gin of safety. But after recalculating the pro jected distances, NASA concluded the speeding telescope would be far enough back. This was the first mission in which a shuttle flew in formation with two satellites. Columbia’s five astronauts re leased the saucer, called at Shield, on Friday. That night, sion Control and the astrot watched nervously as the ; disc drifted to within lOfei Columbia’s cockpit.
