Environmental Protection Agency in 1995 to assess the extent to which Texas public school (K-12) teachers are using the Web and the Internet for classroom in struction and whether they would be willing or likely to do so in the future. The project also investigated teacher perceptions of the usefulness of the TWRI Web site, ‘Texas WaterNet” (locat ed at http://twri.tamu.edu) to support classroom teaching. Jensen will explain how this project was conducted as well as results from it. He will also provide an overview of some of TWRI’s Web ef forts, including such efforts as developing searchable databas es, linking a list server to the Web site, posting digitized videos, and creating a new Web site about septic tanks and on-site wastewater systems. The major focus of laboratory activity is the support of academic, research and in dustry initiatives in visualization sciences. The Laboratory’s ca pability couples digital imaging, computation, and multimedia to an advanced degree. To date, the M.S. in Visualization Sci ences has a near 100% job placement rate. Marvin, Jr., Global Knowledge Group Wednesday, Novembers, 12:00—1:00 p.m., Rudder 308 Delphi Client Server Application and Track Testing Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) in the Department of Student Life administers approximately 10,000 tests per year to students who need to take their tests in an alternative place or format as part of their academic accommodation. From the beginning, this process (which involves multiple contacts with the student and department) had been done by hand. The old process was inefficient and did not allow easy retrieval of critical information. Adaptive Technology Services has devel oped a Delphi 2.0 32-bit multi-threaded client/server database application to track the testing process. The Test Manager sys tem uses barcodes to identify each test and track its movement through the testing process. SSD has plans to distribute the application to other uni versities with similar needs. Eventually, the system will incorpo rate student disability records, e-mail functionality and Web connections for on-line queries of tests. This presentation will demonstrate the application and operation of the above de scribed system. Thursday, November 7,2:00—3:00 p.m., Rudder 301 Department Of Entomology Web Site and the Digital Drag onfly Project The Department of Entomology Web site provides information about the academic, research and extension programs. Course offerings, research areas and specific laboratories are highlight ed. Extension programs and information on the Web site now include insect management recommendations for the major agricultural commodities. Lesson plans and information links to other interesting sites are provided for schools and youth. The Digital Dragonfly project will show how adult dragonflies can be captured in full color using a personal computer and a desktop scanner. The dragonflies are not harmed and may be released after scanning. Each scan contains a significant amount of taxonomical detail and the images are to scale. The Texas LoanSTAR Program, an Internet-based Conser vation Program for Texas State Agencies The Texas LoanSTAR program is a 98.6 million revolving loan program that was inflated in 1989 by the State Energy Consei- vation Office. LoanSTAR provides revolving, low-interest loans for energy conserving changes to be made in public buildings and schools in Texas. Participants must repay the loans in four years or less based on the estimated savings. As of August 1996, LoanSTAR has saved the state of Texas over 35 million dollars by reducing the amount of energy consumed in state agencies.
