ROBERT EARL KEEN Ps Tuesday • September!! A&M student makes a bi catch to win grand priz By Wesley Poston The Battalion ONCE AN AGGIE, ALWAYS AN AGGIE Friday September 20 Pre - Yell Practice Cor T Mo 'Ton BIG CONFERENCE • BIG CONCERT Roger Stroman went fishing last weekend and came back with a whale of a tale. Stroman, a sophomore wildlife and fisheries major, won the McDonald’s Big Bass Splash fish ing tournament Saturday on Lake Fork near Alba, Texas. His catch of a 12.17-pound large mouth bass sent him home with a $21,500 check and a Stratus Bass Boat 285 worth $23,000. Last year was Stroman’s first time to fish in the tournament or any other, he said. “I didn’t do any good last year at all,” he said. This year, however, was a dif ferent story. "I had a little more experience this year,” he said, "and a little more patience.” Patience made the difference from Friday, the first day of the • tournament to Saturday, Stroman said, when he caught his treasure. Saturday morning Stroman set out again with “a little more confidence” and landed the biggest fish of the weekend on his second cast. Stroman, an avid Fisherman, had fished in the lake several times and has a good deal of expe rience in the sport. “I fish a lot,” he said. “1 try to go up there once a month, at least.” The tournament, which is sponsored by the Ronald McDonald House, attracted 3,527 anglers from around the state for the three-day fishing frenzy. The entry fee was $140 for all three days, making the tournament one of the largest in Texas. Stroman’s father, a guide on the lake, entered his son in the tournament and offered some helpful advice. The sun was shining on Friday as he headed out alone to seek his fortune underwater. His father had suggts spot 25 feet deep on ii But the site yielded notli the first day.
