Page 4 • The Battalion • Monday, June 24, 1996 Democrats party, but GOP delivers R epublicans sure know how to have a conven tion. From location site to press packets to the Weather, the conservatives of Texas have one up on the Democrats. This month I covered the Texas state conven tions — Democratic and Republican. All I can say for the Democrats is they can party with the best of them. Hanging out with A1 Franken, dancing to a live blues band and tossing back all the suds one could ever desire made for a good time. But beer and blues do not a convention make. The Republicans, on the other hand, may not have thrown a party to end all parties, but they did put on a top-notch convention. The Democrats met in the Dallas Convention Center — not as classy as the Republicans’ stomp ing ground, the Alamo dome. And the minute I ar rived at the GOP convention, I was given a press packet. Can’t say the same for the Dems. Refresh ment stands were scattered around the Dome, whereas I had to push my way to one lemonade kiosk in Dallas. Also, the media was given ample room to move around and plenty of opportunities to interview the speakers. Not at the Democratic con vention. Even the weather was better — Texas fi nally got some rain over the weekend. Though conventions don’t measure a political party’s ability to lead, the OOP’s organization hints it’s ready for November. But, then again, we’ll see. ALAN KEYES I went all over this country. I went to Republican gatherings, large and small. ... When I stood up to defend the truth that this party must not depart from the principles upon which it was founded, that we must stand for justice today as we stood for justice in the 19th century, that we must demand respect for the rights of all human beings, regardless of their color, their race, their creed or their position in the womb ... everyone would stand with me and declare that these are the Republican truths, that this is the American way. ... We stand before each other and the American people four-square for returning the power of our people to the hands of our people. ... We also know that you cannot return power to the people unless you respect the strength of character needed for them to use that power rightly. We can call this nation back to a future of strong families and real self-government if we are willing, with courage, to remind the American peo ple that this republic and its people shall stand in freedom as long as we fear not to go down on our knees before Almighty God and in respect of his authority and truth. There are days when Bill Clinton uses Bob Dole’s speeches the way students use Cliffs Notes. I’m surprised that the animal rights people haven’t gotten on Clinton’s case for giving chameleons a bad name. ... To start getting our country moving again, one of the critical areas we have to start with is the tax code in Washington. ... Taxes are not only a means of raising revenue, taxes are also a price. A tax on income, a tax on prof it, a tax on capital gains is the price you pay for working, the price you pay for being productive, suc cessful, risk-taking and innovative. Make the price ... too high and you get less of them. W U America needs a new conservatism of PAT BUCHANAN the heart. Not only for the innocent pre-bom, but for the elderly, the men and women who brought us through the Depression and World War II. ... We’ve got to provide a voice for them, and we’ve got to provide a voice for the working men and women of this country. Look at what happened as a consequence of NAFTA — we were promised a trade surplus, we got an 18 bil- lion-dollar trade deficit, 360,000 lost jobs this year, ille gal immigration is soaring, narcotics are pouring into this country. ... Bill Clinton put together a 50 billion-dollar bailout for the Mexican government of Carlos Salinas and his brother Raul. Raul got away with 100 million dollars. Carlos ... is now in Cuba. ... Bill Clinton wanted Carlos to be head of the World Trade Organization. ... Didn’t he look at his FBI report? 5J Eighty-four percent of the delegates (to this convention) are re ligious conservatives, and we’re going to send a pro-life, pro-family message to all of America out of this convention. ... Since 1994 ... it’s almost as if [Bill Clinton] has been bom again. I had a friend of mine say to me after he heard one of Bill Clinton’s recent speeches ... Tf I had closed my eyes I would have thought I was listening to the voice of Ronald Reagan.’ Well, I knew Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan was a friend of mine, and Bill Clinton, you’re no Ronald Reagan. ... The media is worked up into a full-frothed fren zy.
