It is not a good lesson about financial responsibility.” The American Express Company stated that if a person spends $500 with a credit card charging 19.8 percent and only makes' the minimum payments, it will take more than 2 1/2 years to pay off the debt, adding an interest charge of $150. The company also stated that if a person spends $2,000 with a credit card charging 18.5 percent and makes the minimum pay ments, it will take more than 11 years to repay the debt, and will cost $1,934 extra in interest. Jonathan Neerman, a senior political science major, said he feels pressured by credit card companies because he receives about one application a day. He said he only has one card and uses it to make big purchases. “When I get applications at home, my mother hand writes a letter to the credit card company telling them to leave her boy alone and that he doesn’t need another credit card,” he said. Neerman said students should be care ful when sending payments and should write their account numbers on the checks This allows the cardholder to keep track of his payments to avoid problems with the credit company. “I sent a payment in, and the next month I was charged a late fee because the credit card company claimed they hadn’t received my check,” he said. Neerman said he called his bank was told his check had cleared, so he called the credit card company to find out what the problem was. “It turns out they had received the check but had credited the wrong Neerman account,” he said. "They had credited my father’s account instead of mine.” Tue Septeir JTmWmat’s Up VIP Research, Inc. For more information call (409) 776-1417 Tuesday Italy Spring ‘96 for Future Teachers!
