Ltd.'s talks with top Hollywood talent agent Michael Ovitz to head MCA Inc. have col lapsed, a source close to the negotiations said today. Word that Ovitz won’t head the studio came as Seagram announced the comple tion of its purchase of an 80 percent stake in MCA from Matsushita Electric Indus trial Co. of Japan for $5.7 billion. There was no immediate announce ment on who would head MCA under Seagram, a Canadian beverage company. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it won’t be Ovitz. The source said Seagram’s negotia tions with Ovitz fell apart today over fi nancial issues. Ovitz wanted a lucra tive compensation package and asked that Seagram buy out his stake in his Creative Artists Agency for $250 mil lion. The agency represents such stars as Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep and Sylvester Stallone. Ovitz’s lawyer did not immediately re turn telephone calls seeking comment. MCA President Sid Sheinberg is now ex pected to remain at MCA through an inde: inite transition period. Sheinberg did no: immediately return a telephone call. Seagram has never commented put licly on the reports of the talks will Ovitz. Spokesman Chris Tofalli said to day that Seagram was “continuing to ad dress the issue of management but we’rt not going to discuss individual names.’’ The Battalion Classified Ads Phone: 845-0569 / Fax 845-2678 Office: Room 015 (basemenf) Reed McDonald Building 1AGGIE’ Private Party Want Ads Business Hours < O a_ co S10 for 20 words running 5 days, if your merchandise is priced $1000 or less (price must appear in ad). Simpson defense tries to block juror dismissal □ Jury lost two pan elists Monday: one Hispanic, one black. LOS ANGELES (AP) -li trouble-plagued O.J. Simpsor jury lost two more panelist; Monday, a Hispanic woman ant a black man, but the defens; rushed to an appeals court tn ing to reinstate the black man Superior Court Judge Lana Ito said only that he found “goa cause” to remove the jurors. The two were missing whe: panelists left the jury rooma: ter testimony was postpone: Monday morning. The womar a 28-year-old real estate aje praiser, had already been see home. The 54-year-old post- operations manager who;; ouster was being challenge! remained at the hotel when jurors are sequestered. Both had reportedly beenc der scrutiny for some time, an the judge spent hours ink: chambers in recent weeks e bating with lawyers whetk they should be removed. Ito’s pool of alternates i dwindle to two, from the ori; nal 12, if the postal worke: dismissal is upheld. Jurors hf been sequestered since Jan. although opening stateme: didn’t begin until Jan. 24. Leaving Ito’s chambers aft the decision was made, prose: tors appeared ebullient. Defer; attorneys were downcast, ar: Ito immediately announced tkr had asked for time to filer emergency appeal. He held up testimony forks: a day, then canceled it altogeti er. The ousted jurors were not immediately replaced. The disruption haltedp® ceedings just as the case wto enter its most gruesome phase- coroner’s testimony and thedis play of autopsy photographs- and Simpson attorney Johnn: L. Cochran Jr. said the defens might ask to stop the trio longer than a day. A source close to the car said the defense was challenf ing Ito’s removal of the blaci juror as “an abuse of discrf tion” with no good cause shoe for dismissal. Defense lawyers also dis closed Monday that Simpso: doesn’t want to be in conr when the autopsy evidence: presented. Cochran said Sim[ son almost bolted from tfe courtroom Friday when a pro; ecutor graphically describe how Ms. Simpson may haft been murdered. WRIGHT: Plenty of pretenders to NBAs best Continued from Page 2 obtain a championship ring, his chances of winning this award will increase exponentially. Attention! About face! “The Admiral” has now entered the race. David Robinson, the league’s MVP, had one of the best statistical years in the NBA,but as stated earlier, the Wright award includes the per formances of the candidates in the postseason too. Robinson is probably the most focused player in the league and the best role model around. But his playoff down fall ruined the Spurs’ chances of getting their hands on the elusive NBA crown. Once David and the Spurs can tame Dennis “The Worm” Rodman and play more as a team, they can grasp the coveted champi onship ring. Now we come to the player regarded by many as the greatest of all time — Michael Jordan. Everyone wants to be like Mike, financially speak ing, and his “second coming” this season would have been Quarter Pounder in his Hanes. Well, the esteemed judge has chosen the player best suited for the first annual Lee Wright NBA Player of the Year Award. He possesses every thing a franchise player should: an unstoppable shot, amazing quickness, outstand ing defensive skills and most importantly, the desire to win and never give up. He was last season’s league MVP, Defensive Player of the Year and Finals MVP — the only player in history to accomplish that. But that was last year; what has he done this year? Not much except for lead ing his team this season de spite being diagnosed with anemia, toying with breaking Jordan’s record for playoff scoring average and leading the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference to the NBA Fi nals. Oh yeah, that team beat the top three seeded teams in the conference — something that has never done before. This season, “The Dream” has played exactly like his nickname: He just doesn’t seem real. Idaho student wins state jackpot □ Hiatt will collect a total of $87.6 million. BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Pam Hiatt was clear Monday on what she intends to do with her Powerball jackpot of nearly $87.6 mil lion: “If I want it. I’ll buy it,” The 26-year-old college student also said she will quit the Ida ho National Guard and drop out of Boise State University, at least for a while. “Today we’re all getting new cars for the whole family,” said Hiatt, who is expecting a child next month. She accepted a ceremonial check from Gov. Phil Batt as her mother, sister and three brothers watched. Her first payment was $4.38 million before taxes. She’ll receive the rest in $4.4 million yearly chunks. It was the multistate game’s fifth-highest jackpot. “I’ll invest part of it, most of it, new cars, new house, I guess whatever I want” Hiatt said. “If I want it. I’ll buy it.” Astros 6, Marlins 5 Royals 4, Rangers 1 FLORIDA HOUSTON KANSAS CITY TEXAS ab r h bl ab r h bi ab r h bi ab r h * Veras 2b 4 0 0 0 Cnglosl cf 3 1 0 0 Coleman If 4 1 1 0 McLmre 2b 4 0 10 Tvrz cf 5 0 3 0 Blgglo 2b 4 2 2 3 Goodwin cf 4 1 3 1 IRodgz dh 3 1 1 o Shffield rf 5 0 0 0 Bagwell 1b 4 1 2 1 Lockhart 3b 2 0 0 1 WCIark 1b 3 0 0 1 Conlne If 2 3 2 1 Gnzalez If 4 0 0 1 Randa 3b 0 0 0 0 JGmzalez If 4 0 0 o Clbmn 1b 4 0 1 0 Dnnels 3b 3 0 0 0 Joyner 1b 3 0 1 2 Tettlton c 3 0 0 o Arias 3b 3 0 2 1 Shipley 3b 1 0 0 0 Gagne ss 4 0 1 0 Greer cf 3 0 11 KAbbtt ss 4 1 1 1 Eusebio c 3 0 2 0 Nunnally rf 4 0 0 0 Paglrulo 3b 4 0 1 0 CJhnsn c 4 1 0 0 Miller ss 4 1 0 0 Hamelin dh 4 0 1 0 Hare rf 3 0 o 0 BWItt p 2 0 1 1 Swindell p 2 0 1 1 Norman dh 0 0 0 0 Gil ss 3 0 0 0 Pndlton ph 1 0 0 0 Dghrty p 0 0 0 0 Mayne c 4 0 1 0 RVeres p 0 0 0 0 MThpsn ph 1 0 0 0 Stynes 2b 3 2 1 0 YPerez p 0 0 0 0 DVeres p 0 0 0 0 Gregg ph 1 0 0 0 Mgadan ph 1 0 0 0 Totals 32 4 9 4 Totals 30 1 4 ' Nen p 0 0 0 0 Totals 35 5 10 4 Totals 33 6 8 6 Kansas City 002 010 100 — 4 Texas 100 000 000—1 Florida 031 001 000 — 5 Houston 012 000 003—6 DP—Kansas City 1, Texas 2.
