Seagram engages
powerbroker
Ovitz to head
MCA Collapse
ANGELES (AP) — Seagram Co. Ltd.'s
talks with top Hollywood talent agent
Michael Ovitz to head MCA Inc. have col
lapsed, a source close to the negotiations
said today.
Word that Ovitz won’t head the studio
came as Seagram announced the comple
tion of its purchase of an 80 percent stake
in MCA from Matsushita Electric Indus
trial Co. of Japan for $5.7 billion.
There was no immediate announce
ment on who would head MCA under
Seagram, a Canadian beverage company.
The source, who spoke on condition of
anonymity, said it won’t be Ovitz.
The source said Seagram’s negotia
tions with Ovitz fell apart today over fi
nancial issues. Ovitz wanted a lucra
tive compensation package and asked
that Seagram buy out his stake in his
Creative Artists Agency for $250 mil
lion. The agency represents such stars
as Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep and
Sylvester Stallone.
Ovitz’s lawyer did not immediately re
turn telephone calls seeking comment.
MCA President Sid Sheinberg is now ex
pected to remain at MCA through an inde:
inite transition period. Sheinberg did no:
immediately return a telephone call.
Seagram has never commented put
licly on the reports of the talks will
Ovitz. Spokesman Chris Tofalli said to
day that Seagram was “continuing to ad
dress the issue of management but we’rt
not going to discuss individual names.’’

Superior Court Judge Lana

The two were missing whe:

WRIGHT: Plenty of
pretenders to NBAs best
Continued from Page 2
obtain a championship ring,
his chances of winning
this award will increase
exponentially.
Attention! About face! “The
Admiral” has now entered the
race. David Robinson, the
league’s MVP, had one of the
best statistical years in the
NBA,but as stated earlier, the
Wright award includes the per
formances of the candidates in
the postseason too.
Robinson is probably the
most focused player in the
league and the best role model
around. But his playoff down
fall ruined the Spurs’ chances
of getting their hands on the
elusive NBA crown. Once
David and the Spurs can tame
Dennis “The Worm” Rodman
and play more as a team, they
can grasp the coveted champi
onship ring.
Now we come to the player
regarded by many as the
greatest of all time — Michael
Jordan. Everyone wants to be
like Mike, financially speak
ing, and his “second coming”
this season would have been
Quarter Pounder in his Hanes.
Well, the esteemed judge
has chosen the player best
suited for the first annual Lee
Wright NBA Player of the Year
Award. He possesses every
thing a franchise player
should: an unstoppable shot,
amazing quickness, outstand
ing defensive skills and most
importantly, the desire to win
and never give up.
He was last season’s league
MVP, Defensive Player of the
Year and Finals MVP — the only
player in history to accomplish
that. But that was last year;
what has he done this year?
Not much except for lead
ing his team this season de
spite being diagnosed with
anemia, toying with breaking
Jordan’s record for playoff
scoring average and leading
the No. 6 seed in the Western
Conference to the NBA Fi
nals. Oh yeah, that team beat
the top three seeded teams in
the conference — something
that has never done before.
This season, “The Dream”
has played exactly like his
nickname: He just doesn’t
seem real.
Idaho student wins state jackpot
□ Hiatt will collect a total of $87.6 million.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Pam Hiatt was clear Monday on what
she intends to do with her Powerball jackpot of nearly $87.6 mil
lion: “If I want it. I’ll buy it,”
The 26-year-old college student also said she will quit the Ida
ho National Guard and drop out of Boise State University, at
least for a while.
“Today we’re all getting new cars for the whole family,” said
Hiatt, who is expecting a child next month.
She accepted a ceremonial check from Gov. Phil Batt as her
mother, sister and three brothers watched. Her first payment was
$4.38 million before taxes.
She’ll receive the rest in $4.4 million yearly chunks.
It was the multistate game’s fifth-highest jackpot.
“I’ll invest part of it, most of it, new cars, new house, I guess
whatever I want” Hiatt said. “If I want it. I’ll buy it.”
