(AP)- Bo Jackson, who turned his two-sport stardom into a hit feature of celebrity marketing, is retiring from baseball, ending one of America’s great sports stories. Bo, however, is not about to disappear. Jackson said TYiesday he is interested in becoming an actor, a real one on the big screen, not just the Bo who performed ath letic feats for TV commercials. “I’m very serious about this,” he said of his desire to learn the stagecraft of Hollywood. “I’ll never just play ‘Bo Jackson’ ... I’ve been playing ‘Bo Jackson’ for 32 years.” Now on the William Morris agency roster, with pilots and possible movie projects in the works, he said he might play an ex-athlete, but “I want to get as far away from the sports spec trum as I can.” The end of his dazzling sports career — Heisman Trophy, base ball and NFL star — came with little fanfare. He was at his Chicago home Tuesday taking calls, fielding questions on the phone while greeting his 6-year old back from gymnastics class. Home, with his wife and three children, is where he wants to be now, something he learned during the eight months baseball players were on strike. “After eight months I’ve real ly gotten to know my family,” he said. “That is the big thing be hind it.” Jackson said he also will be pursuing business interests Among his various investments in his native Alabama, he and Charles Barkley own a restau rant at Auburn. He also works with the HealthSouth sports medicine company in Birming ham and he is marketed by Bo Jackson Enterprises in Mobile. “Yes, Bo Jackson is on a bud get,” he said, describing how fi nancial planning helps make sure his family will always be secure. Jackson, 32, became some thing of a marketing icon a decade ago when he combined near-Olympic sprinter’s speed with the bruising power of a Jim Brown in football or a Frank Thomas in the batter’s box. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1985 as a tailback at Auburn University, then it was on to even bigger things in the pros. Offense the name of the game for Oilers’ Fisher □ Jeff Fisher and new offensive coordinator Jerry Rhome implement a new offense. HOUSTON (AP) — In less than a full season, the Houston Oilers have attempted to run three offenses. They started last season with the run-and-shoot under Jack Pardee, and began moving to a pro style approach in the final six games with Jeff Fisher as coach. Now Fisher is putting togeth er the offense he hopes will pull the Oilers back to respectability after last season’s 2-14 finish. “This is the one we’ll stick with,” Fisher said. “You can’t put in an offense in a short pe riod of time and expect to be successful.” “We’ve put a great deal of em phasis on installing the offense,” Fisher said. “We’ve got some things scheduled in April, May and June and hopefully we’ll be ready for training camp.” Fisher expects his new of fense to be much more ad justable than the run-and-shoot. “It’s a multiple offense that will have different combinations of people in the game at differ ent times,” Fisher said. “You'll see a little bit of everything but you’ll definitely see a commit ment to the running game.” Fisher has changed more than the Oiler offense. Only three assistants remain from last year’s staff. Jerry Rhome is the new offen sive coordinator and Fisher has relinquished his defensive coor dinator duties to Steve Sidwell. The Oilers also have moved to upgrade at quarterback by sign ing former Los Angeles quarter back Chris Chandler to a four- year, $5.6 million contract to compete with Cody Carlson and Bucky Richardson. They worked out former Wash ington Redskins quarterback Mark Rypien on Monday and could use the third pick in the draft on April 22 to choose Alcorn quarterback Steve McNair. Tom: “The Top Ten Things We’ll Miss Now That The Strike Is Over. 10. Having to watch Frank Thomas and Jeff Bagwell hit again. 9. The way Link Jarrett hustled no matter what the score of the game. 8. The photogenic personal ities of Donald Fehr and Bud Selig. 7. Half-price tickets and any seat in the house. 6. The charisma of Jerry Creamer. 5. Players who play for the love of the game. 4. An abundance of walks, errors, balks, and catcher in terferences. 3. The way an Aubrey Wag goner autograph would just brighten your day. 2. Replacement player baseball cards. 1. Two words: Blaise Koze- niewski.” Mike: “Thank you, Tom. Those were indeed funny words. Laughing helps folks, laughing helps. Next, please.” “My name is Peter and I will always love replacement players.” Everybody: “Hi, Peter!” Peter: “I’m kind of confused right now. I got a tatoo of Dave Rohde on my left shoulder and I don’t know what to do. It means the world to me, but I’m think ing about getting it taken off. I’m thinking that Pedro Borbon should be there because he real ly represents what the replace ment players were all about. I’m so confused.” Clint (bawling): “Have you ever thought about putting a tatoo of Pedro on your right shoulder?” Peter (hyperventilating): “I’ve never thought of that, thanks, man. I think I’m gonna get Rocky Elli and Auturo On tiveros on my back. My body is going to be a shrine to the re placement players.” Mike: “That’s just great, guys. I think we made real progress today. Remember to morrow is a new day. The play ers might be back at work, but there is no agreement between them and the owners yet. If they’re as stupid as I think they are, we might be seeing Bubba Carpenter and Mica Lewis back in major league uniforms.” Everybody: “Hurrah! Hurrah!” BOB’S ACCOUNTING REVIEW 1003 B.
