By Shelly Hall The Battalion Many think the song “Eye of the Tiger” was the motivational theme song in Rocky III, but for Texas A&M senior All-American golfer Anthony Rodriguez, it has a deeper meaning. “My mentor, (Hall of Fame golfer) Chi Chi Rodriguez, told me when I was 14 that when you are getting ready to play, you have to have the eye of the tiger,” Rodriguez said. “You need to have the feeling that you can’t be beat.” Since coming to A&M, Ro driguez said improvement has come with experience. “I’ve improved a lot since my freshman year,” Rodriguez said. “You just learn over time how to perform.” Rodriguez said there has been one major factor that has contributed to his success this season. “Working with my sports psychology instructor. Dr. Arnold LeUnes, has helped me a lot,” Rodriguez said. “He has helped me think about the posi tive when I’m under pressure.” The achievement that Ro driguez said he is the proudest of is reaching the pinnacle of golf at the collegiate level last season. “I am the most proud of making All-American last year and making the NCAA’s,” Ro driguez said. After already winning four tournaments this season, more than any other player in the country, Rodriguez said he has attained the goals he had set for himself this year. “At the beginning of the year, I wanted to win four tourna ments,” Rodriguez said. “Now that I have accomplished that, I would like to make first team All-American and be the best I can be.” Golf was not always Ro driguez’s first love. Tennis was the game that brought him to A&M first. “I came to tennis camp here when I was young,” Rodriguez said. “I got burned out with ten nis when I was 12 and began playing golf.” Another honor for Rodriguez came last week when he was se lected as one of six golfers to play on the United States team to play against Japan this summer. With a stroke average of 71.52, Rodriguez has been a key to the success of the Aggie golf team this season. This Sunday, Rodriguez will lead the team to the All-Ameri can tournament at Old Orchard Coun try Club in Sugar Land, Texas. With his eligibili ty as a collegiate golfer ending this year, Rodriguez said he has plans to con tinue his golfing ca reer when he re turns from playing with the U.S. team in Japan. “I’m turning pro in July when I get back from Japan,” Ro driguez said. “Chi Chi Rodriguez will be my sponsor. For now, though, Rodriguez said his immediate goals are to contribute to the team as much as possible. “My goal right now is for the team to win the NCAA’s and the Southwest Conference.” "I got burned out with tennis when I was 12 and began play- ing golf." — Anthony Rodriguez Replacement Players Anonymous hold meeting u FTy name is Mike and |\/| before I start the ▼ JLmeeting, I would like to thank all of you for showing up. I memorized the names of all 850 players and now I feel so stupid. Mike: “You’re not stupid, Clint. You just love replacement players. There’s nothing wrong with that.” Clint (sobbing): “I guess you’re right. But I know all their names, and now all that information is useless. I know them all from Chris Antosek to Bill Wengert. It took me forever to pronounce Mark Sobolewski’s name correctly, and now it’s all wasted. For heaven’s sake I missed the birth of my first child. But you know what, guys? I would do it all again if given the opportunity.” Mike: “Thank you, Clint. You are an inspiration to us all.
