I'm Jeff Liv ingston, and I'd like to bring stu dent govern ment to you. The only focus of my adminis tration will be ensuring that student govern ment represents all students, and that all actions of student government are a true reflection of your views. Every week, we should hold "Campus Meetings," during which current stu dent senate bills are discussed, and stu dents voice their opinions of them. Sandwich boards and The Battalion should also be used to publicize current happenings in student government. On matters that are particularly important, or of a highly controversial nature, you - not student government - should de cide through a student referendum. Among the issues I would like to see student government address or re-exam ine next year are library, fees, parking and security. Student government has passed a bill to enhance library funding, but our library still is drastically under funded. We should examine the current usage of student service fees closely and determine ways to re-allocate funding to the library. Library fines should be used to ensure that books are returned promptly so others may use them. As a minimum, a 3/5 majority roll call vote in student senate should be used to raise fees, and every effort must be made to ensure that fees remain low. Campus se curity can be enhanced by improving lighting and ensuring current lighting is well maintained. In the coming year, a number of im portant issues will be addressed here at A&M, and it is imperative that you, the students, have a voice in the process. A multicultural requirement will be one such issue, and I want to ensure that you have an opportunity to state your opin ion on this proposal. I will do everything in my power to see that in the fall elec tions, you will have the vote in a student referendum on the proposed multicultur al requirement. You, not the student sen ate, the student body president or an ap pointed committee with student mem bers, should be able to represent your views on this issue. My only commitment is to you, the students of Texas A&M, and I pledge that my actions will represent you, and no one else. Please take the time to vote, it is important. Thanks, and GIG 'EM!! • Jeff G. Wilson I am Jeff Wilson, a junior industrial distri bution major from Boerne, Texas. I am seeking the po sition of student body president. As the prima ry spokesperson for students to the Texas Legis lature, the Board of Regents and the greater Texas community, the student body president must be an effective communicator. They must also have ex tensive knowledge of the campus, the Administration and student government. Through my position as executive vice president of the Student Govern ment Association, as well as other cam pus involvement, I have gained experi ence and knowledge of the Texas A&M campus. Experience is an important factor when deciding among candi dates; however, it is most important that a candidate possess the leadership skills necessary to turn experience into action. I feel that I have demonstrated my leadership abilities and can effec tively carry out the position of student body president. My goals for this University include three primary areas: security, technology and preparation for career opportunities. Security: With increased concern about security, I will initiate a campus wide violence prevention program that will include self-defense courses, rape , awareness course and the posting of rape prevention signs in every bathroom — both male and female — on campus. Technology: In this age of growing technology, computer access to infor mation cannot be ignored. We must use the computer resources available to allow student to register for classes, re trieve class notes and access financial aid information. Jobs: The end result of a college edu cation is a career. I want to join forces with the Career Center, the Association of Former Students, and successful grad uates in all professions. As student body president, I will implement job forums and increase faculty involvement with students. The role of student body president does not end with a platform. If elected, I will take these goals and combine them with the student input about student concerns. We can work as a unified campus, making Texas A&M a better place to develop and learn. As students we cannot wait for the future. As leaders we must help create it. • David A. Washington We must re vive the "Spirit of Aggieland" and restore campus unity. My goals and objectives as student bod y president in clude a variety of subjects and issues that I be lieve to be the true concerns of the student body. Among them are bringing to the atten tion of the Student Senate the need for us, as Aggie leaders, to take a more visible stand on issues that af fect the student body. My platform proposes that the ex ecutive branch, in conjunction with the legislative branch, hold monthly televised "town hall" type campus fo rums on preselected topics so that all students may have a voice in pro posed legislation. I also hope to bring to our govern ing body a new set of ideas that may help to enlighten the membership therein of the true concerns of our peers. I will strive to ensure that the aca demic concerns are adequately repre sented. For this, I will promote more active student participation in the academic councils of their colleges. These are just samples of what is pos sible with me as your voice. In order to be a successful student body president, policy agenda setter, formulator of policy and analyst, one must display leadership based knowl edge of the facts, create cohesion and deliver results as promised. Therefore, to be effective as a leader, I must combine a number of leadership styles in order to properly address the concerns of the campus. I have led and worked with a vari ety of student organizations which in clude Student Senate, Honors Student Council and the Vice President's Ad visory Committee for Financial Aid, and I have worked on a variety of projects that require flexibility and an open mind. If elected as your student body president, I intend to exercise the techniques of leadership on an even greater scale. The key is to revive the "Aggie Spirit" through student interaction. Selecting the appropriate leader is the first step. If you demand results, then you must demand Washington for student body president. • Toby Boenig Howdy Ags! I once heard the quote, "1 don't care how much you know, until I know how much you care." Some people have said that it doesn't matter how much expe rience a student body president has. I disagree with that because I be lieve that experience not only shows how much a person knows, but more importantly than that, experience shows how much a person cares. My name is Toby Boenig, and I want to be the next student body president of Texas A&M. I hope that after you look at my record of service in the student gov ernment, as well as other organizations, you will see how much Toby Boenig does care about Texas A&M. I have served in the Student Senate for four years. When I was chair of the Academic Affairs Committee, we started the fight for extra reading days as well as the pub lication of professor evaluations — which are both being implemented. Those are just a few issues that I have been able to work on. I do agree that experience is not the sole reason to vote for a student body candidate. My vision is to prepare A&M for the Class of '00. I want to do this by focusing on three areas: Student life: • Improving campus security by increas ing the number of emergency phones, in creasing the number of self defense class es in the kinesiology department and in creasing University police presence dur ing night hours. • Utilize off-campus bus routes for home football games for added convenience • Set up monthly roundtables for stu dents to open channels of communica tion regarding cultural differences. Academics: • Ensure library accountability to students through the'creation of a student advisory committee to oversee the allocation of student funds for library improvements. Legislative: • Actively oppose the recommended elimination of federal student financial aid through initiating a combined effort with student leaders at other universities across the nation. I hope that by looking at some of my ideas and experience you see that Toby Boenig does care about this University. My vision is to prepare A&M to over come the challenges of the next century. I want my vision to be our vision, so please Vote for Toby Boenig. ote March 29 & 30 • Class of ’96 President Candidates • Gerry Brown Howdy, my name is Gerry Brown, and I'm seeking re- election as president of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of '96. The past year has been extremely re warding - not only for myself, but for the Class of '96 as well. The first semester culmi nated with an extremely successful Elephant Walk. Through close work with the Class of '95, Traditions Council, the Redpots and MSC facul ty, the Class of '96 was able to set a new precedent by returning Elephant Walk to the solemn tradition that it once was. Elephant Walk also was a huge financial success, with the Class of '96 Elephant Walk T-shirts being the most successful ever. Other successes of this year have been the Class of '96 - '97 Class Ball, revival of the Class of '96 newsletter and the first ever Junior Leadership Appreciation Reception. This year's Boot Dance also promises to be one of the best ever. I would like to see achievements such as these continued next year as we become seniors and assume the leadership role of Texas A&M Univer sity. As Class of '96 president, I will continue to strive to reach our finan cial goal of $96,000 for our Class Gift. Through pride, experience and leadership, I hope to lead the Class of '96 as Texas A&M University's finest class ever. On March 29 and 30 vote #1 on the ballot for Gerry Brown, Class of '96 president. • Chris Williams Howdy Fight in' Texas Aggie Class of 1996!!! My name is Chris Williams, and I am highly motivated to be your next presi dent. I'm an offi cer in both the MSC Council and student gov ernment. I'm a third-time Fish Camp counselor (Camps Knobel, Richmond, Story and Moore rock!), and for the past year I've had the privilege of chairing the Class of '96 Newsletter Committee. I've learned plen ty this year about what our class council should be doing for our class and even more about what we should expect from our class president. My goal in this cam paign is to let you know that we have the right to demand excellence from both. Your Class Council should provide leadership and direction for the class, promote class unity, represent the class to the campus and community and pre serve the traditions that make each class unique. These things just take some hon est effort. I hope to lead our class council in that effort to make our senior year un forgettable. I really think, we can make a difference for our class by working to gether, and I'm willing to spend the next year of my life proving it. Your president should be willing to lead by example in the areas of commit ment, integrity, motivation and team work. I challenge you to demand this from your president, regardless of whom you elect. If your class is important to you and if you want to see a real difference made next year, I would appreciate your sup port. Vote for the candidate with ZIP ... Chris Williams for '96 President! • Class of ’98 President Candidate • Blake McKinney My name is Blake McKinney. I am the current freshman class president and a member of the Corps of Cadets. It has been a great year for me. As Class of '98 president, I have gained an incredible amount of knowledge about what it takes to be an Aggie and how to get things done within the University system. I am currently working on a fundraiser for the class, which would allow students to purchase tickets for a drawing in which they could win free parking garage spaces and PTTS "Gift Certificates" to pay parking tickets. '98 T-shirts continue to sell like wildfire, earning hundreds of dollars for the Class. The Class of '98 Ex ecutive Council and I are also presently working on the Class of '98 Fish Ball, which will be on March 31 (Friday), in the MSC (Semi-formal/Casino) and the GROVE DANCE/MIDNIGF1T YELL (take two) which was rained out three weeks ago. I've had a great time doing all of this and am just getting warmed up for our Pisshead year! GIG 'EM fee: 11 d md people to- I a little better last. I'm also a mem ber of the Corps of Cadets, Com pany F-2, run ning for election as your senior yell leader. Some of you may be won dering what type of person it takes to be a yell leader. To me a yell leader is someone who is dedicated 100 percent in everything they do. Also, I feel a yell leader must be the epitome of a Fight in' Texas Aggie in all aspects. He must show that Twelfth Man spirit, embrace the camaraderie we share here at Texas A&M and hold close to his heart the great traditions practiced for so long here at this world class University. A Yell Leader is a respectable person, ready to motivate the students and team at all times. Being able to grow up around Texas A&M and having the opportunity to attend Aggie events, I've been able to see what type of people Fightin' Texas Aggie yell leaders are. These people hold characteristics of in tegrity and respect. When I think of this person, I think of myself. Through the experiences and activities I've taken part in at A&M, I feel I have acquired these traits. With these characteristics and having a genuine love for this Uni versity, I would be greatly honored and privileged to be your next senior yell leader. Let's go Ags. Show your Aggie spirit, and remem ber on Wednesday and Thursday to get out there and vote. My name is Rick Harvey, ballot #8. Thanks for your time. Gig 'Em! • Class of ’97 President Candidates • Matt Chilek There are many reasons why the Class of '97 should re-elect me to Executive Council; the most important follow: 1 . I am the c u rrent vi ce- president of the Class of '97, and the only candidate with experi ence as an executive officer. I know what is going on, and I have experi ence in an administrative capacity. This is important because next se mester the Class of '97 is going to be the junior class, upperclassmen. I believe that continuity of class leadership is essential to meeting the challenging projects and events ahead of us. Pretend we are racing to be the best class on campus. We have two laps done, and we're preparing for the final push. Does it make sense to brake to a complete halt and change the pit crew and driver? Not to me. We need to retain our momentum and keep the pedal to the metal. 2. I am a team player, working with people to get the job done. Next year, I will be working with your team - the people's team. 3. There are big things on the hori zon for the Class of '97. I'm ready to meet the big challenges. I am your big project man. Regardless of your decision, go vote and participate. More importantly, become in volved and support the Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 1 997. • Jill Jackson Howdy! I guess you're probably won dering why I think I am qual ified to be your class president. Wei I, I could give you a quick run down of my resume with things like Class Newslet ter Committee, Fish Aides, Muster Committee and Assistant to the Stu dent Body President. Although I have learned a lot from each of these posi tions, I don't think that these things completely explain why I am quali fied to be president of my class. I be lieve it takes a couple of very impor tant characteristics to be in charge of the most awesome class to have ever hit Aggieland. First, it takes attitude. That's right ... plain and simple ... a continuously positive attitude. In or der to motivate 600 Aggies, you must first be undyingly motivated yourself. Second, it takes a lot of hard work. As with anything, the more you work, the better the results. I'm ready to put in everything necessary and more to continue and exceed the precedent set by our past class council as the best Fightin' Texas Aggie Class ever. Last, I feel that it is extremely impor tant for a class president to know what they want to do for their class. In the following year, I want to ex pand to see the Class of 1997 take off with fundraising, the organization of Boot Dance and Class Ball, exciting socials, as well as continuing the awesome job it has done with giving back to Texas A&M in the form of ser vice projects. Thanks for your time and GIG 'EM. • Shannon Habgood Howdy '97! Did you know that your class council is one of the strongest to ever come through Texas A&M? It's ab solutely true and as the service chair for this class for the past two years, I have had the opportunity to lead some of those motivated sophomores. In fact, that's why I am excited about the chance to lead this entire class. We have an awesome future in store. With traditions like elephant walk, boot dance, class ball and class gift fundrais ing, service projects, social events open to the whole class, and our class newslet ter which I would like to expand to reach more of our class, is it any wonder that so many people want to be your next class president? I've got plans for this class, which include these activities and even more, but what I really want is to hear from you and to know and imple ment your ideas. From working with the service committee I know the best ideas for projects come from the committee it self. The class as a whole is no different. So, Class of '97, I invite you to ask questions of the candidates who want to lead our class. It's an awesome responsi bility and one that requires nothing but the best. That's why I also want to make myself available to anything you want to know or ask about class council. I invite you to call or write me at smh2847 @zeus.tamu.edu, and I will answer all your questions the best I can. Folks, I want to give my time, energy, and talents to extend the incredible reputation the Class '97 has on campus and in the community. I ask you for that chance. • Travis M. Mabry I am a sophomore poultry science major from La Grange, Texas. I'm a member of the Corps of Cadets, Compa ny B-2, Par sons' Mounted Calvary, and the Poultry Sci ence Club. I haven't run for any offices since becoming a student at Texas A&M in the fall of 1993, so experience in Texas A&M student government isn't one of my qualifications; however, I am a leader, and I know what it takes to motivate people to get things done. Through my experiences at Texas A&M and being involved in the Corps, I feel I have acquired the right leadership qualities to be your presi dent. I have many plans on my agenda for next year. First, parking for both on- and off- campus Ags. Somehow this problem needs to be solved to make day to day student life the best it can be. Second, I plan to make Elephant Walk '95 the best ever. This ranges from t-shirts to the actual event. Third, I want to strive to make the class functions such as, Boot Dance / Class Ball, more enjoyable for all of '97 Ags. Fourth, I plan to have more class events, like going to Yell Practice as a class and putting out for Fightin' Texas Aggie Bonfire '95 together. These are just a few of my ideas that I would like to see become reali ty if I were to become your next class president. • James Atkinson Howdy Ags! My name is James Atkinson and I want to be your president for the fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 1997. This is our year - our opportunity to ascend the ranks and become upperclassmen - and in order for our year to be the best it can be, I'm going to work like mad to provide the best social and academic atmosphere any class at A&M has ever experienced. My goal is to strive for Class of '97 unity, and to accomplish this, I'm going to work to improve the elements of Aggie life which bring our class together, such as sponsoring a greater variety f activities for juniors during elephant walk in order to con tinue the event in Old Army style. How many of you have ever read the Class of '97 newsletter (yes, there is one) or have ever been to our class ball? It seems as though, for too many people, the answers to these questions are "no." As your next president, I will strive to improve class communication and make the class ball the high point in each and every student's social year. Having served two previous terms on student senate, I have seen many great ideas pass through student government which could be applied to class coun cil, and I will use them to make us the best damn class at A&M! Gig 'em!
