Born in London on June 7, 1909, Tandy was the daughter of a rope manufacturer who died of cancer when his daughter was 12. Her mother worked several jobs to put her daughter through private school. Tandy trained at the Ben Greet Academy of Acting in Lon don and made her professional debut in 1927 at a small theater in Soho. In 1932, she married ac tor Jack Hawkins. They had one child, Susan. The marriage end ed in divorce. In 1940, Tandy and her daughter emigrated to the Unit ed States. She landed minor parts in several Broadway plays. While in New York, she met Cronyn through another actor. “I was in love with her right away,” Cronyn said. “But it took two years for her to marry me.” The couple wed in 1942. Metcalf plays the scrappy sis ter Jackie on ABC’s “Roseanne.” She won the same supporting comedy actress award for the role last year. In another repeat, Richards, won the comedy supporting actor trophy for playing Kramer, Jerry Seinfeld’s strange neighbor. “I’m getting spoiled,” said Richards. James Burrows, a veteran of “Cheers,” won for comic directing for the pilot of “Frasier.” The “Frasier” episode “The Good Son” won for best comedy series writ ing. Bette Midler opened the show, wailing a tune from the musical “Gypsy” in feather boa, stiletto heels, blue sequin baby-doll top and leggings. “Home Improvement” star Tim Allen, whose name wasn’t submitted in time for the Emmy nominations, arrived onstage breathless as a presenter, joking: "I almost didn’t make it. My staff forgot to tell me what night it was.” Tracey Ullman was saluted, for best individual performance in a variety or music program, for HBO’s “Tracey Ullman — Takes on New York.” “You know, this show, I did this because my husband said put the diapers down and get back out to work you lazy old bag,” Ullman quipped. Other honors for variety or music programs went to HBO’s “Dennis Miller Live” for writing and CBS’ “The Tony Awards.” “Mystery: Prime Suspect 3” on PBS won best miniseries. In oth er miniseries or special cate gories, the supporting actress Emmy went to Cicely Tyson for “Oldest Living Confederate Wid ow Tells All, Parts One and Two,” and HBO’s “Against the Wall” won for directing. HBO’s “And the Band Played On” was the best made-for-TV movie. “The 66th Annual Acade my Awards” won best variety music or comedy special.
